Councillors get some capital budget figures to crunch

It's still very preliminary, but King councillors last week were given some proposed capital budget numbers for the coming year. The latest figures, provided by municipal staff, call for about $17.04 million in capital spending. But the plan is to fund approximately $1.48 million of that through taxes. The rest would come from reserves, grants and other sources.

Meg Tilly speaks of her past and inspires youth for their future

Former actress and current author Meg Tilly talked about writing, acting and a grim past to students at King City Branch of the King Township Public Library last week. Tilly is best known for her roles in The Big Chill and Agnes of God — for which she won a Golden Globe Award as Best Supporting Actress, as well as an Academy Award nomination.

Special meeting tonight

The King Township Heritage Committee would like to invite the public to attend a special meeting and workshop tonight (Wednesday) at 7 p.m. at King Township Museum. This meeting will feature guest speaker Sally Drummond, heritage resource officer for the Town of Caledon.

Region calls for health risk assessments for all potential peaking plant sites

If you're going to put a peaking power plant in northern York Region, you had better conduct human health and environmental risk assessments for the site. York Regional council approved imposing that requirement on companies seeking to establish such a plant in the area at its meeting Thursday.

Experts gather at Koffler to discuss Species at Risk Act

If changes are needed to the Species at Risk Act (SARA), the place where they've been identified might be in King. The newly-formed Canadian Institute for Ecology and Evolution (CIEE) held a three-day session last week at the Koffler Scientific Reserve at Jokers Hill on Dufferin Street.

Region to hold final meeting on Transportation Plan

York Region will conduct the last meeting in its final series of public consultations tomorrow (Thursday), as part of the process to update the its Transportation Master Plan. It will be at the York Region South Services Centre, rooms ABC, first floor at 50 High Tech Rd.

Free diabetes clinic coming tomorrow

A Live Well Diabetes Clinic is planned for tomorrow (Thursday) at Nobleton Pharmasave. It will run from 1 until 6 p.m. Diabetes affects one in every 10 people, and half of those with the disease don't even know they have it.

Emmanuel Presbyterian Church holding bake sale and luncheon on Main Street

Emmanuel Presbyterian Church on Main Street in Schomberg is starting its second century of worship and service to the community with several events and projects of interest to all. A team from the church has been on a medical mission to Nicaragua for 10 days, and they will be telling their story soon.

Firefighters hosting magic show this Saturday

The King City Firefighters' Association will be sponsoring a fundraiser next Saturday (Nov. 29). It will be from 1 to 4 p.m. at All Saints' Anglican Church on Keele Street in King City. The fun will include a one-hour magic show, starting at 1 p.m., as well as balloons, face painting, refreshments and food for sale and a fire truck for folks to tour.

CanineCuts-Nobelton is the place to get your dog groomed

Friday saw the grand opening of CanineCuts-Nobleton on Highway 27. The store was packed with people and dogs when Mayor Margaret Black and owner Nikki Roberts cut the ceremonial ribbon to officially open the store for business.

Schomberg Village Association holding tree lighting

The Schomberg Village Association will be holding a holiday tree lighting ceremony this Saturday. The event will take place outside Dr. Dillane's on Main Street, starting at 5 p.m. Mayor Margaret Black and Councillor Bill Cober will both be on hand, as the Haywood family, winners of the Schomberg Scarecrow competition in September, will do the actual lighting at 5:15 p.m.

Nobleton Community Hall gets its heritage designation

Last week saw the designation of the Nobleton Community Hall on Old Church Road as a heritage building. The hall is home to both Nobleton's Women's Institute (WI) and Nobleton Lion's Club. Mayor Margaret Black and Councillors Jane Underhill and Jeff Laidlaw, along with representatives from WI and the Lions were on hand for a plaque unveiling at the hall's main entrance.

We can certainly understand the motivation behind the new tougher driving rules that were put forth last week by the provincial government, especially in the way they impact on young drivers. Young people can be excused if they sometimes feel put-upon by the rest of society, being forced to answer for the sins of some of their more irresponsible fellows.

The lack of consideration, respect and common decency shown by a segment of our youth population never ceases to disgust me. Such was my reaction at the sight that greeted me last Wednesday on the Humber Trails. A group of senseless dolts took a large, attractive wooden bench from a parkette area, chopped it into firewood and burned it in a drunken bonfire party.

King City Jamie Thomas As the point guard for the boys' senior basketball team, the 17-year-old Thomas helped his Lions squad win the first Court of Kings pre-season tournament on Nov. 14 at KCSS. The Lions' regular season starts this week. The Grade 12 student used to play soccer at King City. He has also skied, played hockey in Oak Ridges, tennis at Muskoka Lakes Golf and Country Club, as well as basketball with an IEM team in Newmarket outside of school. He lives in Oak Ridges and Aurora, as his parents are Lisa Grierson and Rob Thomas.

Sidon gets first loss of the season

Team Groombridge faced Team Sidon last week, who up until that time was undefeated. A great match was held between the two teams, where both switched back and forth at different times for the lead. By the sixth end, Sidon was ahead by one.
