King Curling Club

It’s game on for Monday night men’s curling
Submitted by Shellee Morning and Larry Sheardown

The King Curling Club Monday night men’s league has rolled through its first set of round-robin games.

After some early lop-sided games, teams adjusted to championship quality ice and the scores got closer, making the competition fierce.

With two weeks left to play, Teams Laplante, Davis and Hampton share records of nine wins and two losses, making them the class of the league. These teams put on a show when they play each other and dissect each others’ strength and weaknesses. The confrontations of these match ups promise some exciting playoff series.

Closely following is a pack of solid competitive teams of; Frans, Belcher, Sidon, Wasylkiw, Gerrits and Sheardown, who all have a chance at the coveted last three spots in the Top Six A division round robin. With enough possibilities to choke a Blackberry, there will be some serious scoreboard watching come Jan. 16 at about 11 p.m., when the last rock settles in the last house, of the last game.

Teams Crockford, Duffy, Eves (with new skip Scott Boynton) Gianfrancesco and Brendan Hayes are rapidly improving and finding their game. After early season struggles, these guys are making some noise no matter who they play and should be considered and not forgotten.

Just when you think it’s safe to enter the house, things get interesting as the Top Six form an A division round robin, and the bottom eight play a round robin with the top two teams looking to move up to the final playoff groupings. Those round robins will be followed by a “winner take all” playoff format.

The championship team will represent the King Curling Club in The Dominion Tankard play downs in 2012.

There’s a lot at stake for these boys so stay tuned for more thrilling action to come.

A winning streak

Team Sheardown played a tough game against Team Crockford in last week’s returning schedule.

Bryce Clark, Wayne Rhind, Gino “Super G” DiFebo and skip Larry Sheardown have come on strong in the latter part of the season, resulting with a four-game winning streak. Skip Don Crockford and his team of John Hakner, Jim Smith and Cliff Tucker were also hoping to keep their two-game winning streak alive, but came up a point short in the final end for an 8-7 decision in Sheardown’s favor.

Team LaPlante, one of the league’s front runners, continued to dominate in their second half opener. Losing only one game so far this season, Kamstra, Oakley, Small and LaPlante had their work cut out for them as they met Team Wasylkiw. Hard work paid off though, as LaPlante collected the 5-4 win keeping their five-game winning streak alive.

Karl Davis and his rink of Gary Boose, Steve Broad and Joe Brunato, in the three-way tie for first overall, were also on the path of winners. Curling against Team Gerrits on sheet 2, the boys went stone for stone, keeping the score tight. In the end, it was Davis shaking hands for the 7-6 win and staying in the top three group.

Team Hampton, the third partner in this winning pack, also managed to win 7-6 over Team Sidon in their opening game for 2012. Thomas Muller, Greg Hill, Jack Purves and skip Bob Hampton know how to throw them and were not about to give up their top spot in the leagues’ running.

All top three teams had to earn their wins last week and will have to remain sharp in order to keep their standings. It’s any team’s title to win as the games come down to the final stretch.
