United Way campaign reaches 66 per cent of fund-raising goal

Set against the backdrop of enthusiastic student cheers at Seneca College’s Markham campus, United Way York Region announced it had reached 66 per cent of its $8.6 million 2011 campaign goal.

That’s five per cent below last year’s comparable at this time.

“With a month left to go, thousands of volunteers and hundreds of workplace campaigns all rallying to help reach $3 million, $8.6 million represents a six-per-cent increase over last year’s achievement,” declared York Region CAO Bruce Macgregor, United Way’s 2011 Campaign Cabinet chair. “We know it’s an aggressive target with the economy still struggling and everyone tightening their belts, but the demand on our frontline programs requires no less. There is a 40 per cent increase in the number of new people knocking on United Way funded doors, so we are making every effort to meet this need.”

Campaign Director Rickesh Lakhani said his team is focused and determined to close the gap.

“The next few weeks will be critical to the outcome of our campaign,” Lakhani said. “We have a full strategy in place and are reaching out to various sectors and stakeholders. And thanks to the continued support of our Cabinet volunteers, who are driving many of the initiatives, and also the support of our accounts, we’re using all the means possible to reach $8.6 million.”

“We’re still feeling the effects of a terrible recession, and with the onset of more uncertainty, we are unable to serve so many people in need - where are families, moms with kids in tow, to go?” observed Patti Bell, executive director of Blue Door Shelters, who operate the region’s only family shelter. “Last year alone, in our three shelters, we had to turn away 1,100 people from our doors, and this year we’re sadly tracking a 23 per cent increase in these numbers.”

“Our goal is within reach,” added Lakhani. “And whether you are a resident, employee or employer, you can help make a difference for the one in three people who reach out to United Way funded agencies each year.”
