York introduces Smart Work Zones

York Region is conducting a pilot project that will provide motorists with information on potential traffic delays through road construction zones. The pilot will take place until the end of August on Jane Street from Langstaff Road to Rutherford Road in Vaughan.

The repaving project on Jane Street will feature several electronic variable message signs that indicate to drivers the approximate length of delays through the work area.

The signs will feature one of the following messages, based on traffic volume and delays: • Travel time less than 5 minutes; • Travel time 5 to 10 minutes; • Travel time greater than 10 minutes.

The Smart Work Zone pilot will use portable remote microwave sensors along the work area to measure the speed of traffic and communicate this information wirelessly to the variable message signs.

The pilot is designed to provide motorists accurate information to help make informed decisions about which routes to take when travelling. If successful, the pilot has the ability to help reduce traffic congestion, reduce travel delays and enhance worker safety in construction areas.

Should the pilot prove successful, the Region plans to use the technology in future road projects.

To help gauge the effectiveness of the new technology, a motorist survey will be posted on the York Region Web site at www.york.ca to allow for feedback. All motorists driving through the Jane Street construction site are encouraged to participate.
