Arena project makes more progress

By David Anderson

King council last week removed a restriction on a block of land for the construction of the Schomberg.

The staff report, which council received and approved, contained a recommendation to remove the holding symbol on a portion of land in order for the Township to proceed with the construction of the proposed arena, curling facility and fitness centre.

The planning and design of the arena has progressed over the last several months, especially with the groundbreaking ceremony two weeks ago and staff, according to the report, is anticipating that construction will commence shortly. The removal of the Holding symbol on one block of land on the site was required before a building permit could be issued.

The subject amendment to the zoning bylaw, initiated by the Township, concerns a block of land south of the Schomberg Industrial Park.

Council approved revisions to a draft plan of subdivision in July to facilitate the dedication of the lands for the arena within the proposed development.

Originally the hold was put on in regard to a stormwater management pond, to ensure that the pond and related works and facilities were being located on external lands to the subdivision, and that they were designed, sited and approved to the satisfaction of the Township.

York Region issued a letter to the Township in September, indicating the sewage works in Schomberg have been completed and the water works are due to be completed next month.

As stated in the staff report, the Region has no objections to the Township permitting the final plan registration and the removal of the holding provisions.

In addition, the Region has confirmed that the related water supply expansion works will be completed within an appropriate time frame to permit the removal of the provision.
