Local churches making plans for Easter

King's Corners
King City United Church Submitted by Shirley Burton

Four of our congregations are hosting a series of midweek Lenten gatherings.

The plan is that we share a 25-minute worship service, which begins at noon; followed by a time of fellowship, which will be shared over our own bag lunches. The host church will provide tea, coffee and juice. The worship will feature a couple hymns, some prayer and a short message or dialogue.

The March 10 service will be at Nobleton United Church (on King Road), March 17 will be at Schomberg United (31 Church St.) and the March 24 will be at York Pines United (3150 Aurora/Lloydtown Rd).

We hope that as many people as possible from all four congregations will be able to participate in each of these special gatherings.

Sunday school will be cancelled over March break, but the kids are welcome to come to service. There are activity bags at the back of the church for them to use if they would like.

Next Friday (March 19) is the St. Patrick’s Day Dinner and Show. Be sure to have it on your calendar. It promises to be a beautiful evening for all, with a wonderful dinner and great Irish singing. Tickets are $15 per person and $35 per family, (two adults/two children). See Shirley Scott for tickets, or call the church office at (905) 833-5181.

The Youth Group will be hosting a Palm Sunday pancake breakfast March 28. Proceeds are to go to the Congregational Challenge. More details to follow.

As we look forward to spring (yes, it is coming) it is time for us to think about the worship services and other initiatives that we will be sharing after Easter. Among other things, are there any particular themes that you would like us to explore during our Sunday reflections, and are there any hymns that you would really like us to sing? Please get your suggestions to Pastor Bob by the middle of April.

The secretary Nancy is in Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. To reach her, phone (905) 833-5181, e-mail to kcuc@belnet.ca or visit the Web site at www.kcuc.ca

King City United Church is south of King Road at Keele Street and one block east to 50 Elizabeth Grove. The morning Service is at 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. The service is followed by tea, coffee, lovely cakes and cookies in the auditorium.

Daylight Time is almost here. Remember to put your clocks forward this weekend, so you don’t miss the monthly hot breakfast at 9 a.m., prepared by parishioners from the 8 a.m. Morning Prayer. Stay after for Holy Communion, with nursery care, at 10:30 a.m.

A big thank you to the community, and to students at the Royal Conservatory of Music, for supporting Friday’s third concert of the year. A standing ovation followed the ensemble’s incredible collaboration in the world première of Alexander Rapoport’s Trio for clarinet, viola, and piano, in Shakespeare’s Aviary, and in his other music and that by Mozart, and Schubert. The evening included soprano soloist Melanie Conly, Peter Stoll (clarinet), Katherine Rapoport (viola) and Peter Longworth (piano).

Jim Davis says thank you for his 80th birthday greetings (Feb. 27). Joan Goulding, celebrating her 80th March 12, came from Coventry U.K. on her honeymoon in 1953 with Harry to Eaton Hall estates (now Seneca College), and joined All Saints’ original Chapel. With the 100th Anniversary of Girl Guides, we honour her 64 years in Guiding.

The alternating Lenten movie series meets March 15, at 7 p.m., to view My House in Umbria at St. Mary Magdalene’s, Schomberg. March 22, we’ll be back at All Saints’ for Doubt. Save loose coins in Lenten boxes or jams jars to go toward free education for girls in India and on the Thai-Burma border. See www.freeschools.org

The Elora Festival Singers concert finale, expected to be sold out, is March 26, at 8 p.m. Get tickets ($25, and $20 for seniors and students) from The Rose Gallery on Doctors Lane; Crawford Wells on Keele Street, south of King Road, and the church office.

As Easter approaches, join us for services in Holy Week. If you have never been to church before, or have not been for a long time, please visit us at 8 or 10:30 a.m. for our Easter Sunday celebrations April 4. See www.allsaintskingcity.com for details.

All Saints’ is at 12935 Keele St., just south of King Road. The office is open Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you have friends who would like a pastoral visit, please leave a message for Rev. Nicola Skinner at (905) 833-5432, or e-mail to allsaintsrev@bellnet.ca

St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church

St. Andrew’s was pleased to welcome the community to King City’s Ecumenical World Day of Prayer service Friday.

The theme this year was “Let everything that has breath praise God,” taken from Psalm 150. The World Day of Prayer Committee of Cameroon wrote the service, which was read by participants from the King City churches, and our Pastor Chris Carter presented the reflection. Thank you to all who participated in so many ways. It was a special time being together, knowing that more than 170 countries and 2,000 communities across Canada were also learning about Cameroon, praying for our brothers and sisters in various circumstances, such as in Haiti and Chile, and praising God for who He is and for His presence and support at all times.

The youth group (Grades 8 to 12) met Sunday for supper and glo-in-the-dark mini-putting. For more information on upcoming events, call the church office at (905) 833-2325 or the Carters at (905) 833-1475.

Busy Moms continues to meet to discuss their Love Dare project, based on the movie Fireproof. The next meeting is Thursday at Miriam Carter’s home at 7:30 p.m.

The choir is preparing for our Easter services. The choir would welcome additional voices. Do you play an instrument? Let Alison Skinner or Marlene Harris know.

This past Sunday, Pastor Carter spoke on Limiting Jesus, based on Matthew 13:53-58. This was the eighth in the sermon series As One With Authority, leading up to Easter.

We warmly welcome you to join us this Sunday. Our worship service is at 10:30 a.m. with Sunday school and nursery care provided. Please call the church office at (905) 833- 2325 or email chris@standrews-kingcity should you have any questions, concerns, prayer or praise items, or should you require a ride.
