A busy week is coming up, with several events, and a spot to welcome you.

Do you remember camping in the rain with the Boy Scouts or the church youth group? Drop in this Sunday

Jan. 24) to renew memories with King City resident, York-Simcoe Area Bishop, and former incumbent, George Elliott, who will preach at both the 8 and 10:30 a.m. Holy Communion services. With nursery care and Sunday school at 10:30, we’ll enjoy chatting over coffee and refreshments afterward.

A group called Alpha, to discuss prayer, the Bible, and who Jesus is, invites guests to meet over an introductory supper next Tuesday (Jan. 26) at 6:30 p.m. In a home setting in the area of Keele Street and Kingscross Drive, hear about the 10-week series. Come with a friend or neighbour to try us out. For information or to RSVP, phone Judith at (905) 833- 5785.

For weeks we have looked forward to the second musical concert in the King City series. In tandem with organist Quirino Di Giulio, the exquisite voice recital of Alexandra Garrison, a founding member of the Nathaniel Dett Chorale, takes place Jan. 29, at 8 p.m. Tickets ($25 and $20 for seniors and students) are available at the door. In the outstanding program planned for us, let the acoustics help you savour the richness of Vaughan Williams arrangements for organ and voice; Bach; Jean Langlais’ Mass and Motet; and four songs Canadian Robert Fleming wrote for Maureen Forrester.

See future Friday concerts on our Web site, and buy tickets at the recital, to ensure a seat – for March 5: University of Toronto professor and composer Alexander Rapoport with his instrumentalists; and for March 26: the Elora Festival Singers.

Jan. 30, York Region residents visit the Food Bank. Please drop off peanut butter, instant coffee (200g), tea (30), and canned items inside the office (east door).

Soon Groundhog Day will be upon us, with winter already half over. Keep in touch to hear about a February youth event, a pancake supper Tuesday, Feb. 16, and even a Scottish Ceilidh night Feb. 26.

All Saints’ Anglican Church (www.allsaintskingcity. com) is at 12935 Keele St., in King City, just south of King Road. The office is open from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Tuesday to Friday. If you know of shut-in friends or those in hospital or a nursing home who would like Holy Communion, please leave a message for Rev. Nicola Skinner at (905) 833- 5432 or send an e-mail to allsaintsrev@ bellnet.ca

Have you ever wondered who really is “Takin’ Care of Business” in light of recent events globally or perhaps in our own lives?

Over the next weeks leading up to Easter, Pastor Chris is presenting a new sermon series entitled “As One with Authority.” Chris invites us “to come and learn at the feet of Jesus as we realize that Jesus is the One with Authority - and it really is all about Him.”

Mark your calendars. St. Andrew’s invites the community to our upcoming Winter Blues Beater series, entitled “Takin’ Care of Business” three consecutive Wednesday evenings in February at 7:30 p.m, starting Feb. 10. Join us for dessert and then enjoy our guest speakers, who can help us take care of the lives we’ve been given. Feb. 10, the topic will be “Takin’ Care of Our Finances” with Tom Caldwell from Caldwell Securities; Feb. 17, it will be “Takin’ Care of our Teens” with Paul Robertson of Youth Unlimited; and Feb. 24, it will be “Takin’ Care of our Bodies” with fitness expert and author Kimberley Payne. Invite your neighbours and friends to hear these experts.

“The rod and reproof give wisdom. But a child left to himself brings shame to his mother. When the wicked are multiplied, transgression increases, but the righteous will see their fall. Correct your son, and he will give you rest. Yes, he will give delight to your soul.” Proverbs 29: 15-17.

Church announcements

Next week’s reflection will be “Our Purpose is reemerging,” based on Luke 4: 14-21.

This week’s Bible Challenge 3 reading will be 2 Kings 25 and Ezra 1-5.

Please hold the people of Haiti in your prayers. Last Tuesday’s earthquake has had a devastating effect on this already poverty-stricken nation. In response to this tragedy, the United Church of Canada has launched an emergency appeal, asking all congregations for “donations designated for earthquake relief and reconstruction in Haiti.” Donations may be made either through our local congregation or directly to the United Church of Canada’s national office at 3250 Bloor St. West, Suite 300, Toronto, Ontario, M8X 2Y4. In the later case, cheques should be made payable to The United Church of Canada, and marked “Haiti Appeal.”

There is to be a church family fun night this Saturday (Jan. 23). Please join the Sunday school at 5 p.m. sharp for a spaghetti dinner (freewill offering), followed by board games. Please let Sheryl Sinka or Serena Edmunds know if you plan to attend so enough food can be prepared. Please bring a board game that can be shared and enjoyed.

This Sunday (Jan. 24) we will be welcoming the New Generation Gospel Singing group. We hope you will be able to attend this service.

If anyone is interested in helping Daniela and Serena plan this year’s Amazing Race, please let us know. If you are interested in being a host home or need more information, we would love to hear from you. The date should be finalized soon.

Volunteer drivers are urgently needed to take cancer patients to the hospital for treatment. If you have a car and some time to spare, please call the Richmond Hill Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society at (905) 770- 1144.

Information to be included in the local papers may be directed to Shirley Burton at (905) 787-1591.

Reminder to anyone taking digital pictures of Church events - please consider sending them to Wayne Smith at jwsmith@sympatico. ca
