Curling playoffs set to begin

Submitted by Shellee Morning Schomberg Curling Club

Schomberg Curlers are preparing for game one of the playoffs for the first half of the 2009-10 curling season.

During last week’s games there was quite buzz on the rinks heading into the final games. Many rinks could be heard mentioning playoffs and judging by the scores, some teams are more than ready.

Both draws produced games with strong performances, big scores and lopsided results.

Rink 2 on the early draw had Doug Groombridge’s team playing against the team of Tim Wright. Both skips play with tough strategy, but calm nerves.

After three ends and up by four, Groombridge’s team left Wright’s team with little room in the house to score. Skip Wright did come back in the fourth by leaving one of his stones undercover and taking out Groombridge's counting rock. The next end saw Skip Groombridge give Wright another opportunity to score by throwing light on his last rock. Both teams traded points in the next three ends from hitting stones and cleaning house. The front ends on each team played hard all game, leaving stones in play and well-guarded rocks. Groombridge’s team made some key shots and left team Wright facing a 7-3 upset. But a great comeback late in the game, brought skip Tim Wright and his team to a tie game at 7-7. With Groombridge feeling a little pressure in the eighth, threw his last rock and ended the game with a one-point difference. Groombridge narrowly won 8-7.
