Recession causes increase in works cases

Ontario Works cases within York Region increased by 201 at the end of 2008 and a further 521 in the first quarter of 2009.

The increase in cases may cost the Region as much as $1.55 million in reserved funds for 2009, according to a recent report to Regional council.

The period of employment time that is needed to qualify for Employment Insurance (EI) in Ontario often prevents unemployed workers from receiving EI. As a result, unemployed workers apply for Ontario Works as a means of support, increasing pressure on the system.
