Black is assured of Grit nomination Newmarket — Aurora Liberals are going to be picking their candidate in the next federal election Aug. 12, and it looks like the nod is going to Mayor Margaret Black. There had been talk of a challenge, but a press release issued Monday by the party announced that Black had been acclaimed. The same statement announced the nomination of three other women; Christine Innes in Trinity — Spadina, Deborah Gillis in Halton and Kimberley Love in Bruce — Grey — Owen Sound. "The nomination of these four exceptional candidates brings the Ontario campaign four big steps closer to being ready for the next election," commented party Ontario campaign co-chair Chris Koddermann. "Their unique skill-sets and perspectives are a testament to the importance of female participation in Canadian politics." Although the nomination is not being contested, the party still has top through the actual candidate selection formalities. That will take place at Aurora Town Hall, starting at 8 p.m. The statement from the party stressed Black's community service, including the fact she's currently in her fifth term as mayor, as well as her period as chair of the York Regional Police Services Board, as well as sitting on the board of Southlake Regional Health Centre, Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust, Municipal Property Assessment Corporation, and the Greater Toronto Agricultural Action Board. Black has been recognized for her distinguished political career as a recipient of the Queen's Jubilee Award and the Rural Female Politician Award. |
