Horticulture

"You're the top! You're the Coliseum. You're the top! You're the ROM Museum. You're the melody from a lilting waltz by Strauss . . ."

And Cathy Ball (Nobleton), with 50 points, you're the top points winner at the Nobleton — King City Horticultural Society's March flower show (the first meeting and flower show of 2009), held in the Nobleton Community Hall this past Monday evening (March 23). Nancy Hopkinson (Nobleton), your imaginative entry in the Green With Envy category of the flower show's decorative and design class had us all green with envy as it was certainly the top, garnering not only top placement in that category, but was also judged Best in Show for the in the entire decorative/design class. John Arnott (Tottenham) had his Leprechaun, which got top honours in the challenging miniature class, as did his entry in the It Might As Well Be Spring category and theme of the flower show. Nancy and John tied for second in point totals with 23 each and Kate Agosta (Bolton) came third with 21 points. Kate's charming little yellow winter aconite (eranthis - from the Greek for "flower" hyemalis — from the Latin for "of the winter" as it blooms in the Mediterranean area in January) gained a top placement in one of the garden bulb categories. It was one of the very few blooming garden flowers available at this time of year for showing. By the by, aconite comes from a Latin word for strong poison.

"You're the top. You're a Paris bonnet. You're a Shakespeare sonnet. You're a Frank Lloyd Wright house . . "

And Margaret Langford (King City) your beautiful Crown of Thorns (euphorbia splendens — named for Euphorbus a top ancient Greek physician) was indeed splendid winning top prize in the Flowering House Plant category of the cultural and specimen class and was judged Best in Show for the entire cultural and specimen class. Sheila Middleton (King City), you're the top point winner in the Novice Section with your two top placements.

Altogether, there were 46 entries in the flower show by eight competitors and show judge, Jean Wiegard (Caledon) gave the show and its exhibitors top marks for the quality and originality of their floral exhibits.

A good turnout of society members and friends gave guest speaker Paul Needler, founder and CEO of Nedco, a Newmarket company involved in water conservation, close attention as he told us that the conservation of water must now become a top priority, for if we continue to thoughtlessly squander this, our most precious natural resource, it will eventually be exhausted and the planet will be no longer be able to support life. He told us that his research showed that in communities like Nobleton, King City and Newmarket, 65 per cent of water used was for outdoor purposes, such as lawn and garden watering, wading pools, washing cars, power hosing decks, patios and exterior house walls and suggested that keeping an updated type of the old fashioned rain barrel for outdoor water use could significantly reduce the amount of water taken from municipal reservoirs and private wells and our water costs with it.

All in all, the show and meeting was "like the Tower of Pisa and the smile on the Mona Lisa was the top" (apologies to Cole Porter).
