Friday saw the grand opening of CanineCuts-Nobleton on Highway 27.

The store was packed with people and dogs when Mayor Margaret Black and owner Nikki Roberts cut the ceremonial ribbon to officially open the store for business.

Roberts was born in Syracuse, Nesw York, and moved to King City. She went to King City Public School and King City High School until deciding to apprentice as a groomer.

Nikki completed her four year grooming apprenticeship in Syracuse under the tutelage of Ann Romano, owner of "It's a Dog's World" in 2006.

"I then moved back to King City and worked at Dandy Dogs in Oak Ridges for another year," Roberts commented.

CanineCuts-Nobelton, Roberts said offers a full range of professional dog grooming services for all breeds of dog from extra large to puppies.

It is open Tues-Sat by appointment with limited evenings available. Dog owners are encouraged to book now for holiday season appointments.

"With puppies, we like to have them come in when they are really young with just a bath, and we do their nails and a little trim under their eyes so they are not too scared of it when they get older," Roberts commented.

She added that with the older dogs, they like to have them come in on a regular basis so it's not a stressful experience for them.

"We have them come in often so they know their groomer and so they are not so nervous and it becomes a quick process for them," Roberts said.

"Sometimes the owners will stay with their dog during the grooming if they are very old and nervous."

When it comes to shampooing dogs, she uses only hypo-allergenic shampoos and aloe or oatmeal base on dogs with itchy coats.

"A lot of dogs have allergies and we usually like to use an oatmeal base shampoo on them because it keeps them from scratching their skin." Roberts commented.

Roberts, who had her dog named Sage, was accompanied by her mother Tamie Beasley, brother Nathan, 16, and sister Emily, 15, her two friends Stephanie Dies and Katrina Coster with her dog Zoee, 8 at the opening.

Also there was Councillor Jeff Laidlaw, Jamie Smythe, King's economic development officer, retiree Arlene Heaps with her foster puppy, Dolly, who belongs to Lions Foundation of Canada and will stay with her until she is one and Bev Berger with her dog, Jasper, 4.

Roberts would like to thank her family, friends and local businesses for all their support and encouragement.
