All around Schomberg St. Patrick Catholic Church, Schomberg The annual Corpus Christi Procession will be held May 24 after 5 p.m. mass at St. Patrick's Church in Schomberg. Fr. Paul is inviting all children and especially those who have received their first Holy Communion to attend. Everyone is welcome. Emmanuel Presbyterian Church Submitted by Peter McKinnon While you're at the Schomberg Fair next Saturday, don't forget to stop by Emmanuel Presbyterian Church on Main Street beside the Fairground gates for some great barbequed chicken. A traditional accompaniment to going to the fair for as long as most of us can remember, you can have a full lunch in the church basement, or enjoy the barbequed chicken at tables outside, or get it wrapped to take home. And finish off your lunch with a slice of homemade pie. A great meal at great prices. Happy Times Euchre Club Submitted by Shirley Stonehouse Last Wednesday was the wind-up for the 2007/2008 season for the Happy Times Club. The Richmond Hill UCW once again outdid themselves by feeding the club membership an absolutely fantastic beef dinner with all the trimmings. The desserts were delicious too - boy, can those women cook and bake! Thanks a million ladies. We also had a change of guard for the 2008/2009 season. The new president is Shirley Stonehouse, who will also keep wrapping the coins and making the bank deposits; the new secretary is Anne Sweeney; the ticket sales coordinator will still be Al Jackson, who arrived back just in time for the dinner and will be back in fine form come October; and last but not least is the public relations point person; Gloria Clarkson. Gloria has served for many years as the club's president and she is wanted on the committee for her knowledge of the club and its membership. Gloria arrived home from the hospital the day of the dinner, so wasn't able to join us, but we made sure she had her dinner delivered to her, as was the case too with Frances McCabe, another one of our long-time members who hasn't been able to be out for most of the year. For the last day, the top euchre player among the ladies was Helen Groombridge, followed by Elaine Ruddy, Dorothy Rodgers and Irene Palmer. The lucky draw was won by Betty Ann Wilson and the carrying prize went to Shirley Stonehouse. Extra prizes won for the ladies went to Mildred Jessop and Margaret Mulgrew. At the men's tables, the top player was John Banks, followed by Mary Duggan, Blake Coulter and Arnold Rodgers. Anne Sweeney won the lucky draw, the carrying prize was taken by John Banks and extra prizes were won by Murray Edwards and Ken Hodgson. The 50/50 draw winners were Blanche Crane and Ken Hodgson. We cannot thank Mary Duggan enough for her tireless energy and her time served at the club's secretary. Mary also made table cloths with the club's initials embroidered on them. There weren't too many days when Mary was away from her favourite sport; euchre. We're not sure which comes first - euchre or cheering on her grandsons at hockey. You're an amazing woman Mary Duggan! We also want to thank Dan Gould for making sure the tables were set up beforehand (sometimes they were already in place thanks to Marlene Stonehouse); and a huge thanks to all those who make sure everything was taken down and put away. Big thanks too to Anne Sweeney for looking after Al's job while he was away; Blanche Crane and Colleen Coulter for collecting the tally cards after play and for settling ties by having people cut the cards. A big thank you to Jake Steenhoek for helping with his carpentry skills - having another base with casters is a great help for more of the chairs to sit on. We are now off for the next four months. Everyone will be missed and please stay safe and healthy. We'll see you all back for |
