The garage: more than a place to park your car!

You have probably noticed that your garage is not just a place to park your car, but multifunctional. The once-boring storage space has now become integrated into the overall home. Homeowners are spending more money to customize their garages.

Therefore, it becomes very important to learn to use the space in your garage more effectively. After all it is the extension of the home and owners' lifestyle. J-F Morin, marketing director for Garaga, an important Canadian garage door manufacturer, thinks some elements need to be considered:

The garage

insulation

When a garage is attached to the house or has living quarters above, it should be highly insulated to keep the heat in and the cold out during winter months. Therefore the insulation factor of a garage door or Rvalue becomes an important element to consider. Keep in mind the higher the R-value (ex: R-16) the better the insulation is.

The perimeter weather seal around the door is just as important as R-value. Look for high-quality weatherproofing at the top/ bottom of the door as well as between door sections. Seals act as an air barrier and over time should not crack or split.

Humidity

It is important to control the humidity. During winter months, if you park your car in your garage, the snow on the car that melts will be a source of humidity. Moreover, firewood storage in your garage can also increase the humidity level significantly. If you measure the humidity level with a hygrometer, it should not exceed 45 to 50% in order to keep the garage comfortable.

In order to control or reduce the humidity level, there are two methods: you can either use a dehumidifier unit or you can shut off the heating system and open the garage door about 8 to 10 inches for 10 to 15 minutes.

Lighting It is important to adequately light your garage if you use it often. If you would like to have natural light, you can add windows to your garage door. There are many window designs in the market that can brighten up your garage they will also add elegance to your home.

Storage

Getting organized is the "in" thing! Shop around for ceiling overhead storage units and bin storage they are great for the garage, and keep other items neatly off the floor. Garage door flooring is also popular, look for slip-resistant concrete floor coating, which is dynamic, durable and user-friendly and offered in a variety of colours. PVC type tiles are long-lasting and conform to your garage floor, whether it is level or not.

Have fun making your garage attractive and practical.
