Nobleton United's Beef Supper is Saturday
Nobleton Notes

Horticulture

"A foggy night in Nobleton town. It had me low and had me down. I viewed the evening with alarm. Coffee at Tim Hortons had lost its charm. How long I wondered could this thing last but the age of miracles hadn't passed . . ."

Because I took myself off to the Nobleton - King City Horticultural Society's first flower show and meeting of 2008 (its 50th year) and gladly paid a $3 guest charge to hear the speaker, see the flower exhibits and talk to other gardeners over tea and coffee and a slice of delicious 50th anniversary cake.

There were 40 floral entries by five exhibitors. Jules Maule-Ffinch (Caledon) had the highest number of points with 35 and won best in show decorative, for her most creative entry Splish Splash, and she also won best in show cultural, for her beautiful white calla lily (zantedeshchia aethiopica). Nancy Hopkinson (Nobleton) had the second highest number of points with 31 and Kate Agosta (Bolton) came third with 26 points. Margaret Langford won the most points in the novice class. First in the challenging miniature category went to Maria Pedersen (King City).

Apologies to Maria, proud of her Danish heritage, when it was reported in last week's column that some wild Icelandic poppies are found in the Faeroes Islands of Norway when in fact these Islands are a self governing part of Denmark.

Owen, an expert arborist, gave a good informative talk on the dos and don'ts of pruning. He told us to do our homework before we start to prune, so that we're not cutting out old wood when the plant under the knife only blooms or fruits on old wood or vice-versa taking out new growth when that's where flowering or fruiting takes place.

Horticultural societies/garden clubs across the province and indeed across the country are delighted that most big grocery chains are now accepting and recycling any clean plastic shopping bags. These societies and clubs encourage everyone to treat the containers provided for this recycling initiative with respect (already I've noticed dirty facial tissues dropped in the bottom of a recycle barrel I went to use - hopefully such disgusting behaviour will be challenged and stopped before it jeopardizes this much needed recycling effort).

The Nobleton - King City Horticultural Society joins all in the community in wishing Prince Philip a speedy recovery from the chest infection that hospitalized him.
