Nobleton United Church received a sizable donation and a message from an anonymous person and we need further clues from this person to be able to fulfill his/her wishes. We hope that the person will leave a follow-up message at the mail box outside the back door, or in the same spot as before. A little late arriving in our cold corner of the world right here . . ." But arrive it will, and coming out to the Nobleton - King City Horticultural Society's first meeting of its 50th anniversary year will make this elusive season seem much nearer. Our March 31 flower show and meeting will be held downstairs in the Nobleton Community Hall (on Old King Road, just north of the arena complex), beginning at 8 p.m. Guest speaker will be Owen from Owen's Tree and Shrub Care. His talk will include the pruning techniques of an expert. Membership is $15 per person. Non-members, who of course are not eligible to exhibit in the flower show, are charged $2 per meeting. The flower show is divided into two sections; decorative and cultural. Decorative includes flower arrangements, sometimes called floral designs, and cultural covers individual flowers, sprigs, branches, vegetables, fruits or potted plants, sometimes called specimens. Exhibitors are also split into two classes; novice and open. The novice class is for beginning and/or inexperienced exhibitors and the open class for the more experienced exhibitors. Once a novice has acquired 50 or more points, the next year he/she must then show in the open class. While still a novice, a member may show in the open class and any points earned there go toward those 50 points already mentioned, but a member who qualifies as an exhibitor in the open class may not show in the novice class. However a member who qualifies as a novice may skip the novice area altogether and show in the open class from the start. In either class in the decorative section, a first place earns five points, a second place three points and third place two points. In either class in the cultural section, a first place earns three points, a second place two points and third place one point. As yet, we have no fourth place or honourable mention category as many societies do, but this under consideration. At each show, the judge usually chooses a first place entry in each of the decorative sections and in each of the cultural sections for "best in show" awards. Although no extra points go with these awards, tokens of recognition are given at the awards dinner in November. Flower show exhibitors are required to have their entries in place and properly tagged by 7:30 p.m. when judging starts. Show tags are available from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at each meeting and someone will be available to assist exhibitors with their entries during that time period. Please note that the flower show area is closed to all but exhibitors and the show committee from 6:30 p.m. until after the judging is finished. This rule helps prevent damage to the exhibits, accidents and congestion. Nobleton seniors' activities The winners of the March 18 afternoon euchre for the women were Paula Latanville, Audrey MacDonald and Mary Bullock. For the men, the winners were Murray Hilliard, Walter Hill and Lou Curtis. We have been pre-empted by the skating club April 1 for both afternoon and evening euchre. The next afternoon and evening euchre will be April 15. The bid euchre will be April 8. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy.
