Change the batteries in your smoke alarms
Clocks go forward this weekend
Would you like some more light in your days?

After this weekend, you're going to have it.

Daylight time starts this weekend, so be sure to set your clocks and other time keeping devices ahead one hour before retiring Saturday night.

And while you're at it, this is a good time to change the batteries in the smoke alarms in your home.

King Township Fire Prevention Officer Keith Wells also said if the alarms are 10 years old, it's time to replace them.

These alarms are required on every storey of the house, including the basement, and outside all sleeping areas. People who's homes are not properly equipped could be facing a fine of $250, Wells said.

Ontario Fire Marshal Patrick Burke pointed to the tragic fire in Hamilton over the weekend, in which five people, including three small children, lost their lives in a home that did not have smoke alarms.

"I'm wondering how many more deaths have to needlessly occur before people get the message," Burke commented. "This young family would probably still be alive today if there had been working smoke alarms in the home."

If you have any questions about the installation of smoke alarms, Wells can be reached at (905) 833-2800.
