Bantam Red Wings settle for consolation crown The recent bantam local league tournament, hosted by the Schomberg Minor Hockey Association, had two teams representing the local village. But the best they could do was have one sipping from the consolation cup. Both teams lost their opening games, and according to the way the tournament was set up, that quickly established that no host squad was going to skate home with the main hardware. The Schomberg 1 team, sponsored by Milk Energy, tasted defeat in their first match at the hands of one of the outfits from Penetang. The final score was 4-0. Meanwhile, the Schomberg team, sponsored by Rona Cashway, took to the ice against the other team from Penetang. The Rona club proved a little better at scoring, but the still dropped the contest 5-1. Both Schomberg teams won their matches in the second round, setting up an all-Red Wing affair for the consolations (ironically, both Penetang clubs lost their second matches, thus eliminating them from further play). The Energy crew faced the team from Wasaga Beach, and won 3-2. Meanwhile, the Cashway outfit blanked the team from Newmarket 7-0. That set up the consolation match, which the Energy folks won 4-3. The entry from Georgina won the tournament with a 4-3 win over Barrie. |
