Development could still come to Kettleby
Letter to the Editor

A comment on your recent article about a public meeting held to consider a draft plan to designate Kettleby a Heritage District.

Quite correctly, you reported that differing views were expressed, particularly on the question of the extent of the proposed district boundaries.

It was interesting to note, that among those present were those with development interests. After the meeting, a quick check revealed that the lands immediately surrounding the village core could absorb sub-divisions with some 300-plus "cookie cutter" type houses.

Meadowvale, designated in 1979, was the first heritage district in Ontario. The district boundaries have remained the same, however, the heritage district has been submerged in a sea of sub-divisions.

Like it or not, the pressure will always be on for more and more development. In order to mitigate the effects of development on the Kettleby's rural character, there is an overriding need for an adequate "buffer" around the core of the village.

One trusts that if Kettleby becomes the first heritage district in King, it will incorporate an adequate "buffer zone."
R.J.Martin,
Kettleby
