Midgets take the title Red and White tourney

The Schomberg midget rep Red Wings needed overtime, but they ended up winning in the Red and White tournament, which the local association hosted recently.

It all came down to a thrilling final match Sunday evening with the Port Credit Storm. The Schomberg squad, sponsored by Borsa Brothers Excavating, scored after a little more than a minute of play, but their foes tied things up 30 seconds into the third period. The extra frame last only 66 seconds before the champions were crowned.

The Red Wings had things fairly easy in the campaign to reach the finals. They opened the tournament Friday with a 5-1 win over the Erindale Spitfires, then Saturday saw them top their foes from NobleKing 4-1. They secured the place at the championship table Sunday morning with a 4-1 win over the Georgetown Raiders.

Port Credit's road to the finals was a little bit rougher. Things started out well for them, as they blanked the Ajax Knights 3-0, then posted another shoutout in their second match, a 2-0 verdict at the expense of Newmarket. They had a few problems in their third outing, losing 3-0 to the Bradford Bulldogs, but the other two wins were enough to get them in the final game.

It was not a great weekend for the men who travelled north from NobleKing. Their first match was a 1-0 blanking at the hands of Georgetown, but they were able to hold Erindale to 1-1 tie in their final outing of the weekend.
