Platten proves prominent

Mike Platten would be one of the first to tell you that having a three-goalie system in Schomberg wasn't working.

"In practices with three goalies it was ridiculous, as we weren't getting as many shots," the rookie Cougar goaltender said.

But, Ryan Wadden, who was an affiliated player with the Toronto Canadiens, was signed by the Ontario Junior A Hockey League club Wednesday because of goaltender injuries to their lineup. A date of Dec. 1 (Monday) was set to cut one of the Cougars' three goalies, which also includes Mike Berdine. He missed a portion of the season with a hamstring pull.

"We wish Ryan well," said Cougars' Head Coach Craig Armitage. "The move keeps him progressing and we didn't need to succumb to releasing a goalie, which was good because of the possibility they wouldn't be picked up by another hockey organization."

The crowded crease resolution has now propelled Platten, a Barrie Colts product (tyke to AA midget), to a three-game winning streak. He is red hot (3-0) in those games making 119 saves on 128 shots, for a sparkling .930 save percentage. As a result Schomberg has won three of its last four Georgian Mid-Ontario Junior C Hockey League contests.

The Schomberg streak started immediately after Wadden moved on, with the Cougars beating the Fergus Devils, 5-3, Thursday at the Schomberg Community Centre. They then defeated the Midland Flyers, 9-4, at the North Simcoe Sports and Recreation Centre Friday. Saturday they also won, as 5-3 was the outcome over the Stayner Siskins at the Stayner Arena and Community Centre.

The Fergus game was a chippy affair, which had a pair of fighting misconducts from forwards Matt Steenhoek (second period) and Enrico Ferri (third).

Forward Dylan Chessell got Schomberg in motion, scoring an unassisted marker four minutes into the game.

But, before the end of the period right-wingers Jordan Toscan and Brock West scored a pair of powerplay goals, to give Fergus a 2-1 lead after the first period.

Twenty-three seconds into the second, Chessell blasted his second of the game, beating Fergus goalie Rob Rankin. Schomberg took the lead at about the midpoint of the contest, as forward Adam Waring backhanded a shot from the left slot after grabbing a rebound off a Kyle Edwards (forward) shot on net. With 28 seconds remaining in the period, as Chessell fell down, he blasted a shot on net, which was tipped in by Ferri, to give the Cougars a 4-2 advantage.

Fergus left-winger Reid Zorzi beat Platten, to edge the Schomberg lead to one, but forward Todd Cantelon scored on a two-on-one with Chessell, to restore the twogoal advantage and preserve the win for the Cougars. Platten made 35 saves for the victory, while Rankin had 27 stops.

Against Midland, 36 seconds in the game, forward Russell Kennedy scored to beat Berdine early in the contest.

Schomberg then got rolling with Chessell, Cantelon (on the powerplay) and forward Brandon Lisi, each beating Flyers goalie Spencer Lizotte. Midland left-winger Daniel Latour scored before the end of the period for a 3-2 Cougars first frame advantage.

Schomberg took total control in the second, as forwards Eddie Weiderer and Ferri each had a pair, while Jordan Ulcar and Mike Volpe (shorthanded) each had one apiece for a whopping, 9-2 advantage at the end of two.

Flyers' centre Josh Asselin (powerplay) and Kennedy both scored in the third with the game already far out of reach. Berdine had 29 saves in the win, while Lizotte had 32 in his loss.

As with the Flyers contest, the opposition opened the scoring with forward Jim Pointon giving Stayner an early 1-0 lead Saturday. Schomberg then bolted for three straight markers, as Lisi (two) and Waring sparked the Cougars to beat Siskins goalie Grant McCaffrey for a 3-1 lead after one.

In the second, Stayner tied the game with centre Andrew Boyle (on the powerplay) and left-winger Aaron Dickenson beating Platten.

The Cougars escaped with the win in the third, as forward Jason McMann and Lisi (on the powerplay) scored, sealing the third straight victory for Schomberg. Platten won the game, saving 44 shots, while McCaffrey stopped 27 in the loss.

Schomberg (12-10-2, 26 points) and Stayner (7-13-2, 16 points) will have a rematch Thursday in Schomberg, starting at 8:15 p.m., for the Cougars' only game of the week.

"It's up to our players to bring their games to the ice," Armitage said. "But, we need to stay disciplined (out of the penalty box) and play within our system, which means being aggressive and fore-checking in the neutral zone and our zone."

Injury report: Forward Jason McMann came back on Saturday after missing five weeks with a broken hand. Forward Ryan Christadler (shoulder pull) will hopefully return this week against Stayner. The team has also taken precaution with defenceman Kyle Ainsley (but has been playing), who has a cut on his leg.

From the press box: Schomberg are second in the GMOJHL with 102 goals (behind the Alliston Hornets with a whopping 177), but are also second allowing 118 (behind the last-place Flyers with 119).

Who's hot?: Here is a look of three of their other players, besides Mike Platten, who are stepping it up during the total team effort winning streak. Forward Dylan Chessell is on red-hot with 10 points (three goals, seven assists) in the Cougars three wins this week. He now leads the team with 33 points (13 goals, 20 assists). Forward Brandon Lisi has doubled his point total from six to 12 points (six goals, six assists) in the Cougars last two wins over Midland (one goal, two assists) and Stayner (hat trick), scoring his first hat trick of the season. Forward Enrico Ferri has nine points (four goals, five assists) in his last five games, including two-four point contests against Midland (two goals, two assists) and Erin (one goal, three assists).
