Even the rain Sunday couldn't dampen the spirits of the faithful who gathered in Nobleton. Bishop Peter Hundt of the Archdiocese of Toronto helped break the ground and bless the site of the new St. Mary Catholic Church, accompanied by Fr. Paul Hancko. Steering Committee Chair Livio Mascarin said contributions to the new church are still coming in, including $10,000 from an anonymous donor. He predicted that by this time next year, there will be four walls and a roof at the site. More...

King residents do not want a gas fired power generating facility on or near the Holland Marsh, or anywhere else in King. KCSS Lions' wide-receiver Adrian Surdi attempts to catch what would have been the game-winning touchdown in the Huron Heights end zone Thursday, but Warriors' cornerback Ryan O'Quinn provided tight coverage to knock the ball away late in the fourth quarter at KCSS. With the game tied 7-7, Warriors' kicker Derek Pasani got the ball into the Lions' end zone for a single point and an 8-7 Huron Heights win. I know this is going to read a little bit as if I'm trying to romanticize things (as if there's anything terribly wrong with that), but we are into what has always been one of my favourite times of the year. It is true that all seasons have their charms. More...
Last Wednesday's public information meeting before King councillors, regarding the proposals of Northland Power Inc. to put a peaker generating plant in the Holland Marsh area of the township, produced few surprises. The vast majority of the people who attended the session don't want such a facility in their municipality, as if that was some sort of a major revelation. More...
It was nice to read about the accomplishments of Eric Lamaze at the 2008 Beijing Olympics this past summer. He is truly a great competitor and I feel we owe him a little more than a nice write-up in the local papers whenever he wins another honor for Canada, or Ontario, or King Township, whatever. More...
When Blackhorse Village Players opens the season with the best of Neil Simon's plays, the laughter is so contagious one would think each member of the audience could rise and proclaim the success of I Ought To Be In Pictures. Indeed, with the talents of three accomplished actors, every listener can sympathize with the dreams and disappointments of becoming a film star. More...
It's no secret that the Schomberg Cougars have to find a way hold leads against their Greater Mid- Ontario Junior 'C' Hockey League opponents. And Thursday, that was evident once again as the Cougars lost 6-5 in a shootout to the Stayner Siskins at the Schomberg Community Arena, surrendering a 5-1 lead. More...

Some pumpkin lore for the season
Horticulture Smile. A great thought to keep in mind, especially as many of us are trying to carve that pumpkin face so it will smile out into our world Halloween ( All Hallows Eve on the Christian calendar). Pumpkins, now a fixture of our modern Halloween celebrations, are members of the large squash family, most of which are native to the Americas. More...
