Chamber of Commerce hosting family corn roast Sunday
King City United Church Submitted by Shirley Burton Next week's reflection will be Who is Happy, based on Jonah 3:10-4:11 and Matthew 20:1-16. The Reflection follow-up will resume after worship, starting Sept. 28. Bible Challenge 2 is coming. This year, we will be reading from the Hebrew Scriptures beginning Oct. 1, with Geneses. The new syllabus is now available. Volunteers are needed to join the newsletter team. If you are interested, please call or e-mail the office and leave a message with Nancy. Information to be included in the Oct. 5 issue of News from the Pews needs to be submitted to Nancy in the office by Sept. 21. While this newsletter will primarily focus on fall activities, advance notice of any events scheduled for mid-November through December would be note worthy. Volunteers are also needed to make Apple Pies Oct. 24 and 25. Please call the office and leave your name if you are able to help on one/or both of these days. Sign up sheets to order pies will be posted shortly. A message from the King Township Food Bank. Many of their shelves are empty. They have a Thanksgiving food drive starting in a few weeks, but they are desperate. Needed items include canned meats, fruit, tomatoes, tomato paste, canned vegetables (especially green beans), small cans of soup, (not tomato), small cookies, small peanut butter, apple juice and Long Live Mac and Cheese (not Kraft). King City United Church is one block south of King Road and one block east of Keele Street, at 50 Elizabeth Grove. We invite all to join us Sunday mornings for the 10 a.m. religious service and children's Sunday school is at the same time. Join the King City Seniors' Travel Club for an exciting trip to Parry Sound, Oct. 4. Enjoy lunch at the Bay Street Cafe at noon, followed by a cruise from 1 to 4 p.m. The cost is $82. All Saints' Anglican Church Submitted by Claire Alexander A lot of interesting events take place this month, and All Saints' welcomes you to each one. This Saturday evening at 7 p.m. (Sept. 20), come to a free organ recital. Our new Director of Music, Quirino Di Giulio, will play Italian, German, French and French- Canadian music, on both Chapel and Church pipe organs. Come to the Chapel on the south side of the Church for the opening. This Sunday (Sept. 21), we continue to celebrate the Eucharist at 8 a.m. for early birds in the Chapel; and are back in the Church at 10:30 (followed by coffee hour), with both nursery and Sunday school offered. Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. (Sept. 21), we join St. Stephen's Anglican Church, at 10103 Keele St., Maple, for the closing community service for the Maple Parish. In this historic service, we thank God for more than 125 years of outreach since 1881, when Rev. O. P. Ford served both mission churches, walking from Woodbridge for morning worship in Maple, and on to Evensong at All Saints', King. Sept. 23, from 1 to 2:30 p.m., we start a six-week book study, using Diana Butler Bass's Christianity for the Rest of Us (order a $15 copy). We hope to explore our personal roots and traditions, and find ways to share our faith. Peter Andrews introduces the topic of Christian Meditation, and its value for calming our stressful lives, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m. Sept. 26, kids meet at church at 7 p.m. for a bowling night with the joint youth group. They have also planned a Halloween party Oct. 31. Remember the annual Vestry Meeting Sept. 28 at noon, following the service. A pot-luck lunch will be shared. Joe Gray, the Canadian director of the Chosen Peoples Ministry, to our pulpit last Sunday. He shared with us that Christ was the Messiah and continues to bring the good news to all people. Pastor Chris Carter will be back from his study leave mid-week. Worship and praise will be Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Pastor's study. All are welcome. Moms and Tots began this week, meeting twice a month Monday mornings at 10 a.m. Miriam Carter and Beth Scheuring are the organizers. Tickets for the York Regional Police Male Chorus performance Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m. are available from Kathy Patterson and Kathy Agar. The cost is $10, and free for children 12 years of age and younger. Seniors' euchre The top player among the ladies in the Sept. 5 euchre play at King City Seniors' Centre was Hilda Fawcett (63 points), followed by Dianne Wear (61) and Rena Gordon and Anne Warner (44). Leading things for the men was Ron Coles (67), followed by Chuck Hansford (62) and Cliff Kettlewell (38). Draw winners were Gord Fawcett, Betty Simmonds and Roy Cairns. The next euchre evening will be Sept. 19, starting at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome. Lions are roaring King City Lions Club announce a new date, Sept. 27, for their annual auction. For 55 years the money raised from the auction has gone to assist many groups and projects in town. As our community grows so does the demands for our financial support. Your assistance and donations of good household and yard materials would be greatly appreciated. Guiding in King City Submitted by Christina Schoenhardt Registration for Sparks (senior kindergarten and Grade 1), Brownies (Grades 2 and 3), Guides (Grades 4, 5 and 6) and Pathfinders (Grades 7, 8 and 9) will be Sept. 17, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. It will be held at King City United Church, 50 Elizabeth Grove. Family Corn Roast This Sunday (Sept. 21) from 1 to 5 p.m. at Wellesley Park (northwest corner of Keele Street and King Road), the King Chamber of Commerce will be presenting a family corn roast. Entertainers will include the John Street Band and Schomberg Idol Amy Rose Payne. The event will also boast clowns, jumping castle, pony rides, face painting, pumpkin carving and apple bobbing for the kids. Food served includes hot dogs and corn on the cob. |
