      York Region received a letter from the Minister of Transportation March 3, indicating they would be receiving a grant of $7,852,638 for public transit capital. This is not from Ontario's budget, but from their economic update statement from mid- December.

King to continue Swim to Survive Joint Venture with the Region of York
      King Township council recently authorized the Parks, Recreation and Culture department to continue providing a basic swim survival program. The program, in conjunction with the Region of York, is targeted at Grade 3 students. Currently, only two schools take part, but Catherine Purcell, director of the department, said she'd like to see all schools get involved by 2010.

      The field is down from six to five to see who will be the 2008 Schomberg Idol. The contestants in the second year of this event took part in their second showcase Saturday at Schomberg United Church.

Acrylic painting workshop at King Museum
      King City artist Nancy Jones will be teaching a sixweek acrylic painting workshop at the King Township Museum. Classes will run Monday evenings from 7 to 9:30 p.m., from April 7 through to May 12. Prior experience painting with acrylic is not required. The cost for all six session is $125.

      The Dufferin Marsh Committee chose Earth Hour to hold another evening of star gazing, and this time the conditions were perfect. Numerous people brought out their telescopes to gaze at the bodies in the night sky. Ann Rockley and her husband Charles Cooper were setting up their equipment to gaze at the night sky.

Crackdown on commercial vehicles a success
      OPP and the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) spent February cracking down on commercial vehicles, and they are reporting success. Police report they checked 8,693 commercial vehicles in February. OPP laid 955 speeding charges, against commercial drivers. Overall, they laid 1,217 charges under the Highway Traffic Act.

      York Region will be asking the province to include the Bradford Bypass in its plans as a critical infrastructure investment. The Region wants it included within the 2031 timeframe of the Growth Plan, which had omittedit.
