King Township's budget process for 2008 is under way, although it's still in the early stages. The first budget draft went to Township councillors last month, and it's currently under revision. The draft budget proposed a tax increase of 12.4 per cent. Council members unanimously agreed that had to be significantly lowered. More ... Glimpses into the social world of women in the 19th century are currently available at the King Township Museum. Five Canadian Women and their Diaries, an exhibit on loan from the Archives of Ontario, is at the museum during March and April. More ... In February, the Grade 10 art class at King City Secondary School had a special guest. Lieselotte Bollmann demonstrated to the class the art of Scherenschnitt. This old German paper craft requires a lot of patience. With sharp, pointy scissors beautiful patterns are cut out. Bollmann is a well known artist in this field. The class enjoyed her art and demonstration. This presentation was co-ordinated by Ms. Chan, head of the art department, and Zohreh Zand of Arts Society King. More ... In recognition of International Women's Day, which was Saturday, the York Regional Police Recruiting Unit is inviting women who are interested in a career in policing to an information session this coming Tuesday (March 18). This year's Schomberg Idol contest, sponsored by Schomberg Agricultural Society and Music 21, Bolton, is well underway. There are six talented contestants ranging in age from 13 to 16, all vying for the 2008 Schomberg Idol crown. This year the contestants have already performed at Main Street Christmas and for the Kitchen Breedon Manor residents. More ... Each year, King Township supports community groups or members with financial assistance through its grants program. This year, the Township received 21 grant applications, totalling $161,230. Before considering the applications, council recently heard from some of the applicants who wanted to speak on behalf of their proposals. More ... United Lumber Home Hardware and Building Centre (Bolton) customer Carol Hutchins of Schomberg won 1,000,000 Aeroplan Miles as an Aeroplan winner in the Home Hardware Great Gift Giveaway Sweepstakes. What's surprising is Hutchins was a former Air Canada employee, so two years ago, she wouldn't have been eligible to win the sweepstakes. Assistant store manager Kimberly Broad, store manager George Bardalo and front head supervisor Karla Navarro were on hand to present Hutchins with her prize. More ... Members of the community were stopping in at the King City Post Office Friday to wish Assistant Postmaster Sandra Charman a happy retirement. She has been on the job for 20 years, recalling when she started, everyone picked up their mail at the post office. "That was sort of the hub of the community," she recalled. The King City resident said she plans to spend her new free time travelling, involving herself in the king City Seniors' Centre, and doing "whatever I want to do." More ... The weather tried to keep people home Saturday, but a collection of sheep and goats were able to draw a lot of them out. The Schomberg Agricultural Society held their annual Farm Tour Saturday, highlighting three sheep and goat operations in New Tecumseth. These tiny lambs were in a pen at Bakerridge Farm, offering Sarah Osmond, 4, Genevieve Carroll, 7, and Jack Carroll, 10, a great view. More ... Lion Dr. David Harper was presented with the Harry A. Newman Award last Monday by the Nobleton Lions Club. Harry A. Newman was the first Canadian President of the Lions Club International in 1924. This prestigious award is presented to members who show leadership in the fight against diabetes and in volunteer work in and around their community. More ... The Nobleton Skating Club is celebrating 50 years in the community, and Mayor Margaret Black was on hand Monday night to recognize the occasion. She was there to present a certificate to Janice Boyd and Susan Zacchigna, co-chairs of the club's Ice Show, which is currenlty in rehearsals. The theme of the show will be A Skate Down Memory Lane, and it will be a tribute to Nobleton over the last 50 years. About 225 skaters will be taking part, and the club is trying to find old members from the past who would like to skate once more. There will be two shows April 5, at 1 and 7 p.m., and a 1 p.m. show April 6. More ... Dec. 6 was a big day in the lives of 84 Canadians They graduated from their basic military qualification course at the Naval Reserve Training Division at Canadian Forces Base Borden.
