Phone-in campaign nabs 100th impaired driver

York Regional Police continue to report success from the Safe Roads . . . Your Call campaign.

Since the campaign started late in June, 100 impaired drivers have been arrested as the result of citizens calling 9- 1-1.

The 100th arrest was made at approximately 8 p.m. Nov. 10 at the intersection of Palmer Avenue and Essex Avenue in Richmond Hill. A vehicle was observed by citizens going through a red light and striking a tree. The 9-1-1 call led to the driver, who was not injured, being arrested for impaired driving.

The Safe Roads . . . Your Call campaign encourages citizens to call 9-1-1 when they see a suspected impaired driver. The campaign includes road signage, posters and a short video on what happens behind the scenes when someone calls 9-1-1. The video can be viewed on the York Regional Police Web site at www.yrp.ca and following the Safe Roads . . . Your Call link on the main page.
