Cougars are still seeking that elusive first win of the season
By Bill Rea

Cougar Matt Wolfenden uncorked this shot in the dying seconds of Saturday's match, but he wasn't able to adjust the final score with it. Erin prevailed 4-1.
It was another frustrating week for the Schomberg Cougars.

The local junior C heroes were downed at home thursday night 7-2 by the Fergus Devils. They turned in a more credible performance Saturday night in Erin against the Shamrocks, but they still came out on the wrong end of a 4-1 final score.

Head Coach Gary Waldrum said his men got off to a weak start Thursday, but they were able to get their act together.

"We had a good second period," he remarked. In fact, both the Cougars' goals came in the second frame.

Enrico Ferri and Chris Case did the scoring, with assists being notched by Ryan Christlander and Justin Brooks.

Penalties were the big problem for the team Saturday night, as three of the four Shamrock goals came on the power play.

It was Jason McMann who connected for Schomberg, with help from Brooks.

"We were right with them for most of the game," Waldrum remarked after the match.

He added the problems still involve questions of experience, as he pointed out several of the players are not used to playing three 20- minute periods at the junior C level.

"More experience and more adjusting" is what's needed, he said. "We're getting there."

The Cougars return to action tomorrow (Thursday) night, when they entertain the Alliston Hornets. The puck will drop at 8:15 p.m.
