York Pines United Church Two Sunday services made for a busy Oct. 28 at York Pines. In the morning, Anastasia Hill received the Hodgson Bursary to help with her early childhood education studies. Bonnie, Anastasia's mom, and Thelma, her grandmother, catered a lovely thank-you reception following the service. Delicious sandwiches and sweets encouraged all to stay well into the noon hour. This was the sixth presentation of the Hodgson Bursary. Created to honour the memory of Bill Hodgson, long-serving member of provincial parliament and member at York Pines, the bursary seeks to support the education aspirations of young people in the congregation. This year, the bursary was presented by David Hodgson, Bill's son. Suzanne Svadjian told of the involvement of Anastasia in the life of the congregation. Eliza Hodgson, Bill's widow, and Bob Hodgson, Bill's son were also present. Oct. 28 was the 19th anniversary of Bill's passing. Receiving Awareness Awards were the members of the Joint Search Committee, whose work finished with the covenanting service in the afternoon. Neil McGeachy, Lou-Ann Hunt, Cyndy Rowlands and Deb Carpenter were recognized for their leadership in recommending that Rev. Ross Carson be "called" to be the new minister at York Pines. At the covenanting service, the choir sang Declare Ye This; the preacher, Rev. Phil Hobbs of Belleville, chose the title, Peter and Ross for his message; Rev. Carol McKinley of Queensville, representing York Presbytery, led the service, and Rick McKinley, president of Toronto Conference, extended greetings to all. Adding to the numbers present were members and friends from Ross's former congregations at Greenbank and Seagrave in Durham Region. Fr. Suren Nathan from the Christ Church Anglican attended and by his presence brought an ecumenical component to the occasion. The time together ended with lots of pictures around a big welcoming cake. |
