Pabst moving to rename Nobleton arena after Dr. Laceby
By Bill Rea

Dr. Bill Laceby made numerous contributions to the King community, and Councillor Linda Pabst is calling for them to be recognized.

She raised the issue at Monday night's council meeting, moving that the arena in Nobleton be renamed after Dr. William Laceby in his honour.

Dr. Laceby, who spent some 40 years fixing the teeth of people in King City and beyond, and then he set himself up as a real-estate broker and also found time to be a Mason, Shriner, Lion and member of numerous boards and agencies, died in May, after a long battle with cancer. He was 65.

Pabst had trouble controlling her emotions as she put forth the proposal. "The emotion is important because he was a very special person," she explained.

There was plenty of agreement from around the council table.

Councillor Jack Rupke recalled he attended high school with Dr. Laceby, and remembered he did a lot of his volunteer work behind the scenes. There were not a lot of chances to thank him.

"Of course, it's too late now," Rupke observed, adding renaming the arena would be a way to acknowledge his contributions.

Pabst also recalled Dr. Laceby showed strong leadership in getting the ambulance station established next to the arena in Nobleton.

Township CAO Scott Somerville told Councillor Jane Underhill there is a process involved in changing the name of a facility, which staff will be reporting on.
