More frustration for the Cougars, as they notch two tough losses The Schomberg Cougars played well last week - they just don't have any wins to show for it. The local junior C club ran into more frustration, being doubled 4-2 in an entertaining contest at home Thursday night against the Erin Shamrocks, then being blanked 3-0 Friday in Midland by the Flyers. The Cougars came out meaning business Thursday, and they put plenty of pressure on their opponents. They out shot Erin 12-9 in the first period, but for all of that, it was Erinwho were up 1-0 at the buzzer. They added another marker early in the second before Eddie Wiederer bagged a nice one, with help from Dan Naccarrato and Brandon Binns. Schomberg ran into penalty problems in the second period, and that helped Erin resto re the twogoal lead. Cougars pulled to within one early in the third, thanks to a goal by Ryan Christadler from Mike Volpe, but the visitors added one more a couple of minutes later to nail down the win. The strong start was not enough to carry the team through, as Erin ended up ahead in shots on goal, to the tune of 47-37. Despite the loss, the Cougars benefitted from some exceptionally hot goal tending from Aaron Green, whose rapid glove plucked sure goals out of thin air. "I've been working on it with my goalie coach," the 17-year-old mount Albert resident commented after the game. "I saw the puck well tonight." Although the Cougars have not yet been able to notch a win, the players believe they are on the right track. "We've just got to keep working hard and the bounces are going to come," Green remarked. "He's a good, young goal tender," Head Coach Gary Waldrum observed. "He had a solid game and a lot of timely saves to keep us in." Waldrum was pleased with his men's performance, pointing out the guys received a lesson on what's possible when they support their goalie. "It's a step in the right direction," he commented. "We stuck a little closer to the system we've been working with." He also agreed penalties are still a problem. "We need to get the mental side of the game down," he said. It was a different story Friday night, as Waldrum reported his men had a good outing, out shooting the Flyers 37-26. "We just didn't have any touch around the net," he said. The Cougars are looking at a busy weekend. They will be hosting the Fergus Devils Tomorrow (Thursday) night, starting at 8:15 p.m. Friday night will see them on the road to Alliston for a 7:30 game against the Hornets, then they will be heading back to Midland Saturday night to play the Flyers again. That game will start at 7:30 p.m |
