Riding on the success of the June outdoor festival, organizers of Kingfest have announced three concerts at Newmarket Theatre over the coming months.
The first takes place Oct. 14 at 7 p.m., and will feature a country all-star line-up of The Good Brothers, Wendell Ferguson, Russell deCarle and J.P. Allen of Prairie Oyster and Steve Briggs of the Bebop Cowboys.
"We are really looking forward to performing with our friends at The Newmarket Theatre, declared Bruce Good of the Good Brothers. "It will be an excellent show with great country talent."
"Kingfest is great for our community and is delivering top music here at our doorstep," he added. "The 2007 festival was first-rate and we are excited to be part of the next year's outdoor festival as well."
The Good Brothers, consisting of twins Bruce and Brian and younger brother Larry, have an international following that began in the early 1970s when they catapulted into the Canadian country music spotlight, touring with Janis Joplin, The Greatful Dead and The Band. For eight consecutive years, from 1976 to 1983, the group received a Juno Award for Best Country Group. In 2004, The Good Brothers were inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame. Their hit singles include That's the Kind of Man I Am, Homemade Wine, Fox on The Run and Midnight Flight.
Younger brother Larry Good was named Instrumentalist of the Year (Banjo) at this year's Canadian Country Music Awards.
Wendell Ferguson has the reputation of being one of the best guitar pickers in Canadian music -- so much so that he received the Guitar Player of the Year Award six times. He is also known for his zany wit, sense of humour and storytelling. Wendell has recorded with some of the biggest names in music, including The Dixie Chicks, Shania Twain, Patty Loveless and George Fox.
Russell de Carle is the lead singer and song-writer of Prairie Oyster, a top Junoaward winning country band that he also founded. He has been named Bass Player of the Year nine times by the Canadian Country Music Association and appeared as a guest on the acclaimed CBC Songwriter's Circle Series. Russell also opened for Merle Haggard on a Canadian cross-country tour.
J.P. Allen of Prairie Oyster is a virtuoso violinist. He has toured with The Good Brothers, played with Ian Tyson's Great Speckled Bird and appeared on Tommy Hunter's TV show. Allen will perform alongside The Good Brothers Oct. 14 at The Newmarket Theatre.
Steve Briggs is the band leader of the Bebop Cowboys. In a relatively short period of time, the Bebop Cowboys have become know as Canada's premier western swing outfit. Briggs has performed, arranged and recorded with both local and international artists including the Brothers Cosmoline, Gregg Lawless, Bill Usher, Russell de Carle and Carroll Baker.
"With this stellar line-up of talent, the Kingfest Country concert is a mustsee show," declared Leah Springford, Kingfest president. "What a great outing for a Sunday night in Newmarket."
The Kingfest Concert Series is sponsored by The York Region Media Group, title sponsor, and Laceby Real Estate of King City, gold sponsor.
