Overseeding now can pay off in the spring Fall is an important time to improve the strength of your lawn in order for it to be able to endure the long hard Canadian winter. This fall will be especially important as most of us look out at our backyards and see nothing but brown dead grass. This summer was one of the driest in more than 50 years and it definitely took its toll on many of our lawns. This fall, if you can take the time to aerate your lawn and overseed with fresh grass seed, you will see a much improved lawn come spring. The temperature and dew point make the fall an ideal time to overseed your lawn, cool and damp nights create an ideal growing condition for lawn seed and these conditions can often last well into November. If you own a lawn tractor, you can rent or purchase a plug lawn aerator which will pull soil plugs from your yard, which will allow oxygen to penetrate the soil and create a perfect seeding environment as both the soil plugs and the ground perforations allow seeds to be protected from the elements. Seed that doesn't take this fall will simply lay dormant under the winter snow and spring to life next year. So a little bit of effort this fall will bring renewed life to your lawn next year and in no time, you can be out there on the mower spending hours cutting that new lawn of yours. |
