Horticulture "There's no business like flower show business like no business I know. Everything about it is exciting . . ." It certainly was for exhibitor Barb Downey of Castlederg (just north of Bolton), as she swept the last Nobleton - King City show, winning best in show decorative for her clever arrangement Antique Road Show; best in show cultural for her beautiful pink Polyantha Rose The Fairy and her Miniature Microchip came first. Barb also came second in points with 40. Nancy Hopkinson of Nobleton held her own with most points in show with 80, while Tina Stone of King City came third with 36. The show had 80 exhibits by seven exhibitors. Judge Carol Price of Bolton was much impressed by the quality of the floral entries. Guest speaker Sandy Carlton of Arcadian Daylilies delighted his audience with an excellent talk and slide presentation on his passion daylilies (hermocallis). This is a good time to plant or dig up, split and replant daylilies. As with many perennials, if their clumps are allowed to grow too large, flowers will become fewer and smaller. Daylilies that I have had great success with here in my Tottenham area garden are Mary Ford, that has rich lemon yellow blooms with many a frill, Peatboro that has paler yellow, almost spidery-like blooms, Mauna Loawith apricot coloured flowers and Joan Senior and Gentle Shepherd, two of the few white daylilies. By the by, columbines and hollyhocks (alcea rosea) resent being divided and their survival rate is low. St. Mary Catholic Church St. Mary Catholic Church will be hosting a concert Oct. 26. This is a fund-raising event to take note of with Andrea Garofalo, Peter Marino and Anthony Macri, Canada's Three Tenors. It is to be held at Marylake Shrine in King City.
