Teachers make the world a better place, one child at a time
By Holly Tait

I'd like to tell you about an amazing lady that I got the chance to work with.

Nestled in a little corner of Nobleton lies a day care. But it is not an ordinary day care. Within that building are a handful of ladies who give their whole hearts every day. They make sure that the welfare of every child is the number one reason they are there.

Val Simone in particular was a lady who really shined. She had been with the day care since the doors opened. Each and every day, she dedicated herself to the preschool children with perseverance and creativity. She was always coming up with new and interesting ways for children to learn and develop. Val always wanted every child to grow and be ready for the next step that they would take after day care.

The staff at Nobleton Children's Centre looked up to Val, especially for creative ideas. She had her way of doing things and the staff respected her for that. But she had a real heart of gold and that is what we will all keep with us. She really and truly cared about everyone first.

This past June, Val received news that anyone dreads. Her doctor told her that she had cancer. She went into the hospital and we at the center missed her absence terribly. I worked directly with her, so I missed her all the more. I called her often and was able to e-mail her through the hospital to make sure that she was never missing any events. I was able to visit her and made sure to deliver handmade cards all from the children.

Unfortunately Val did not leave that hospital. She lost her courageous battle with cancer Sept. 4. Fortunately, she was able to meet the grandson she was so looking forward to meeting. Being a grandmother was something she couldn't wait to become and she talked about it all the time.

We miss her presence and especially her friendship every day.

In memory of her, I am planning to plant a tree in one of the memorial parks in Nobleton, if anyone is interested in donating to that cause. Also a plaque is being made to hang in the center to remind us that she was a very big part of the center.

Losing someone you work with so closely is incredibly difficult. I just want to say thank you Val for all that you taught me, and all the things I learned from you. Heaven has gained a wonderful angel. We miss you and we love you Val!!
