St. Andrew's students march for Southlake St. Andrew's College will host a seven-kilometre pledge drive walk from Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation in Newmarket to the college in Aurora this Friday (Sept. 28) at 11:00 a.m. This school-wide event is a major fund-raising effort in support of the construction of the new $110 million Regional Cancer Centre at Southlake, and to honour two very important members of the Andrean community who have battled breast cancer recently: Clare Kowaltschuk and Chryssi Reid. Both women are doing very well today. Kowaltschuk completed the 60-kilometre Weekend to End Breast Cancer earlier this month, raising $31,000 while inspiring and offering hope through her remarks at both the opening and closing ceremonies. Reid was also extremely successful with her Relay for Life fund-raising efforts last spring, raising approximately $24,000 for cancer research. Prior to the walk this week, there will be a cheque presentation by Dylan Baker, SAC Head Prefect, and remarks at 10:45 a.m. by St. Andrew's alumnus Jonathan M. Harris, chair of the Board of Directors for the Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation. All students, faculty and staff will have gathered pledges in advance to participate in this important community event. The school hopes to raise in excess of $20,000. There will be a campuswide barbeque following the march. |
