Horticultural society to meet this Monday
Nobleton Notes
By Angie Maccarone (905) 859-5174

Horticulture

"It's a long long time from August to September . . ."

No not really, so here are the results of the Nobleton - King City Horticultural Society's Aug. 27 flower show and meeting.

Most points were won by Nancy Hopkinson (Nobleton) with Tina Stone (King City) in second. Barb Downey (Castlederg) and Kate Agosta (Bolton) tied for third place with 25 points each. Judge Jean Wiegard of Palgrave, awarded best in show decorative to Hopkinson for her imaginative arrangement Night and Day, and best in show cultural to Barb Downey for her beautiful Kevin Fig yellow dahlia Floodlight.

Guest speaker Hans Martin, of King City Apiary, gave a very thoughtprovoking presentation on bees pollination and pesticides. He made us aware that more than half of the plants on this planet are pollinated by bees and wasps, and the unprecedented use of pesticides worldwide is drastically reducing the numbers of these most beneficial insects that have been a part of the ecological system for millions of years. If we continue in this direction our food source is in jeopardy.

The society's next show will be this coming Monday (Sept. 24) at Nobleton Community Hall.

It will start at 8 p.m. The theme of the show will be Autumn Splendor.

The guest speaker will be Sandy Carlton of Arcadian Day Lilies.

St. Paul's Presbyterian

Church

Our Youth Group will meet weekly this year Wednesdays at 7 p.m. starting tonight (Sept. 19). Meet us at the church tonight and get our schedule.

The ladies Thursday morning study continues tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. They are studying the book of Matthew. They'd love to have you join them.

Families from the Ghanaian Presbyterian Church in Toronto will be visiting with us this weekend. Join us for worship Sunday at 9:45 a.m. as we welcome Gregory Dickson to the pulpit. Nursery care (for children five years and younger) is provided during the service and Sunday school for all ages follows at 11.

For more information about any of our activities, please contact the church office at (905) 859-0843.

St. Mary Tea and Bazaar

Just a reminder that the eighth annual St. Mary Catholic Women's League Fall Tea/Bazaar is happening at the Nobleton Lions Community Hall on Old King Road this Sunday (Sept. 23) from noon to 4 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Tea and light lunch costs only $3, with bazaar on the top floor being free if you just want to roam about. There will be something for everyone, visit our craft and sewing table, our white elephant table, bake table and get your face painted while your parents have their tea. See you there.

Seniors' euchre

Sept. 11 euchre winners were Sandy Tower, Doris Clarkson, Claire Mills, Murray Hilliard, Bill Groombridge, Edgar Clarkson and Hazel Harris. There will be a euchre Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Drop in Centre. All are welcome.

Heritage books for sale

Nobleton Women's Institute are resuming their fall meetings, starting tomorrow (Thursday) at 7:30 p.m. at the Nobleton Community Hall.

The WI is now 99 years in Nobleton, celebrating 100 years in June. Let's try to keep Nobleton WI active for many more years.

New members are a must, so please come and join us.

This month's meeting is on agriculture. Hopefully a speaker will be present to talk on pasteurization of milk and especially on raw milk now being sold.

At this time, WI want all out there who have not bought a Heritage Book - History of Nobleton from 1796 to 1996, to consider buying one. Please contact Mary Anne at (905) 859- 0709. She has about 200 books still to sell.

Ladies or gentlemen you all can attend our Sept. 20 meeting.
