A few snags to sort out with new green bin program in King

There's a lot of enthusiasm for the new green bin program that's starting in King, but there are also a few minor problems that are going to have to be sorted out.

"Be patient," is the message that Director of Operations Jody LaPlante offered Monday night.

He pointed out there was a bit of a mix-up on the delivery of the bins to homes, but he said about 95 per cent of residents would have theirs by now. He added any new program is expected to run into a few snags.

A couple of councillors voiced the concerns they have been hearing at Monday's meeting.

Councillor Bill Cober congratulated staff on the work that's been done to implement the program, which offers residents another way to dispose of their organic garbage, thus cutting down on the amount of trash the Region is obliged to send to dumps. Collections are scheduled to start this week.

Cober acknowledged the program is "experiencing some teething," adding it's a "work in progress" and it will take time to sort out all the challenges.

"In the end, this will be a great thing for our municipality," he remarked.

Mayor Margaret Black agreed people are going to have to get the hang of using the bins and working them into their routine. "It's going to take some learning," she commented.

Councillor Jack Rupke said he's been getting a number of calls from people who have not yet received their bins, or who have questions on how to use them.
