Cougars' look good against Stayner The Schomberg Cougars' first pre-season game wasn't a very impressive outing, but they more than made up for it with their match last Wednesday. The local heroes of junior C hockey hosted the Stayner Siskins at Teen Ranch in Caledon, and came away with a solid 4-2 victory. This was a somewhat abbreviated match, with two periods of only 15 minutes, owing to the length of time the ice was reserved. Time was running short, obliging officials to let the clock keep running during play stoppages for the last couple of minutes of the game. Dylan Chisel, Jeff Mulivill, Curtis Gasko and Brandon Lisi collected the goals (Chisel and Lisi scoring on the power play), while Evan Brown assisted on two markers, with Todd Cantelon, Lisi, and Jordan McDonald contributing single assists. The evening's result made head coach Gary Waldrum a happy man, as he commented on "a lot of positive things out there." He was impressed that his men showed "a reasonable amount of discipline," adding they took a number of solid Stayner hits "with no stupid retaliation." He was also impressed with the "signs of a power play, that we haven't had time to work on yet." This was only the second pre-season outing for the club, and Waldrum stressed the actual roster for the coming campaign won't be set for a while. "We've got a lot of guys trying to get on the team, and a lot of guys who are playing well enough to stay," he remarked. The Cougars are scheduled to face Stayner tonight (Wednesday) in pre-season action, starting atat 8 p.m. at Eddie Bush Arena in Collingwood. They are also scheduled to play a warm-up game Friday in Uxbridge, starting at 7:15 p.m. The season home opener is set for Sept. 20, as the cougars will host the Alliston Hornets. this match is scheduled to start at 8 p.m., and it should offer the chance to even some scores, since it was the Hornets that eliminated the side with a sweep in the playoffs last season |
