Jim Reeves planning to run for Green party in York - Simcoe
By Bill Rea

Promoting the local riding association for the Green party is one of the factors that has prompted Jim Reeves to offer to carry the party's colours in York - Simcoe in next month's provincial election.

Reeves, 64, the retired owner of a Canadian Tire franchise, lives in Sutton. This will be his second venture into the political arena, having sought office at the municipal level some 20 years ago.

He said he had three reasons for getting into the race.

One was to indicate that the party is more mainstream than fringe. "It has real practical solutions for the problems facing our communities and the environment," he said.

Another thing he wants to do is work on building up a party organization in the riding.

As well, he said he's running because of what the party stands for. "I believe strongly in the values of the Green party," he declared.

Reeves was talking realistically about his chances of being elected, agreeing either Julia Munro or John Gilbank are likely going to win. But he pointed out a strong Green message on election day will put pressure on the victor to follow through with the promises they make.

He also agreed the party is not going to be forming the government, but there is the chance the Greens can elect a few members to Queen's Park. "There are some strong ridings," he remarked.

The father of two daughters commented he's also a professional engineer. "Engineering is pretty practical and common sense," he observed, adding his business experience taught him how to keep customers and staff happy.
