The highlights of this game were Kamren Wallbank's two home runs and the outstanding pitching of Matthew Sperduti and Will Maclachlan that helped lift the mosquito team to a 9-2 victory.
With the York - Simcoe regions playoffs behind them, the Harris+Harris team then took on the King City Auto Service squad in the semi-final game Saturday morning. Once again the Harris+Harris players supported one another and worked hard to record a 13-5 victory with excellent batting from Christian Sarracini (home run), Will Maclachlan (two triples), Nicolas Sully (double, triple) and singles recorded from Kyle Patton, Kamren Wallbank, Matthew Sperdutti and Jack Mull. The highlight of this semifinal game was Kamren Wallbank crossing the plate to clinch the win, resulting in the Harris+Harris team's berth into the York - Simcoe regions final championship game.
The championship game commenced at 4 p.m. Saturday with the Harris+Harris mosquito team up against BMO Aurora. The season came down to these two great teams playing their hearts out for the title, not knowing it would end up being the closest game of their season.
All eyes were on the opening pitch and the crack of Alex Douglas' bat for a lead off double. Then with two out the Harris+Harris team's offensive came alive again with Kamren Wallbank, Will Maclachlan and Matthew Sperduti making it home, thanks to Mackenzie Koch's triple. With four runs, Harris+Harris moved to the bottom of the first inning and with Matthew Sperduti pitching managed a very effective three up - three down inning.
With the score 4-0 after one inning, Grayson Koch led the top of the second with a single, then Douglas stepped up to the plate a hit his second double of the game scoring Koch. With the BMO Aurora team managing one run in the bottom of the second, the score was 5 to 1.
In the third and fourth scoring five more runs and led the game 6-5. The spirit of the Harris+Harris players remained high and with strong resolve, they scored one run on an RBI triple from Maclachlan. With the score tied 6-6, the Harris+Harris team moved into the bottom of the fifth inning with Jack Mull on the mound. Pitching to maintain the tie proved extremely challenging, and although Mull managed an excellent strike out, the BMO team produced the needed run to cross the plate and win the game.
The final score of the York - Simcoe Region Mosquito Championship game was BMO Aurora Team seven and Harris+Harris LLP King 3 Team six.
Congratulations go out to all the players and spectators for their marvelous display of sportsmanship. With the BMO team as winners and the Harris+Harris team as leaders, the well-deserved trophies were handed out to these 10 and 11 year old championship players.
Junior rookies drop
playoff final game
Our King Township Baseball Association (KTBA) junior rookie Schomberg IGA team played in the YSIBA championship game against Aurora Thursday and came out on the losing end of an exciting 25-16 battle.
King took an early lead in the first inning with a 9-7 advantage. The hitting was amazing, but the defence was even better. Force outs by Mark Lago and Christian Leone lead the way while the outfield was on top of everything hit their way, lead by Andrew Dinopoulos and Luke Joseph. First base was patrolled by Nicholas Dicks who made some spectacular solo plays to get runners.
Aurora had a strong second inning, taking the lead back with some timely hitting and having some close calls by the umpires go their way. King would not let this turn of events get them down and they had another strong inning in the final frame, scoring a game-high 10 runs in that inning alone, led by perfect three-for-three games by Serene Falzone, Luca Ferrari and Luke Joseph. The team was excited to receive their finalists trophies, medals and awards, as they all look forward to next season with tons of promise.
This junior rookie team will be a force to reckon with when young stars such as Michael Saraceni, Brock Walters, A.J. DiCrescenzo and Frankie Aloia come back with the experience of this winning season. Congratulations to everyone. Bantam rep Cobras lose to
Vaughan in OBA playoffs
Despite a valiant effort in the second of a two-out-ofthree playoff match up against the Vaughan Vikings tier 2 minor bantams, our own King Cobras were unable to get out of the York - Simcoe OBA playoffs.
The opening game Friday turned into a marathon threehour contest that King ultimately dropped by the score of 19-11.
Ryan Forletta was the starting pitcher, but his control deserted him in the first two innings and the defence could not bail him out. The Cobras never fully recovered from their own mental errors.
The highlight effort of the evening was turned in Brady Boccia, who took over from Forletta and held the fort. Inspired by Boccia's pitching, the team bats, swung mainly by Stephen Leonard, Danton Brinovec and Forletta, came alive and made a game of it until once again the opposition overwhelmed the team in the final inning to pull away.
In the second game Saturday, the Cobras came out hustling and led by a 5-4 score going into the seventh and final frame. Josh Lipscombe threw a complete game, went three-for-four at the plate and scored three runs.
Wouldn't you know it, the top of the inning was not kind to the boys and they proceeded to surrender three more runs, making it too much to ask to produce a final miracle. Forletta and Joel Winer scored the other two runs while Daniel Lisi was two-for-three at the plate and inspirational in the field.
The team wrapped up its season this past week with two league games against North York, both played in a wind storm. The final game was a gratifying 7-7 tie against the team which recently won the Toronto Tier Two championships. The pitching was shared by starter Winer for two innings and Boccia. Arevamped outfield with Lipscombe, Steve LaVerde and Forletta highlighted a good defensive effort, while Forletta and LaVerde scored a pair of runs each with singles going to Leonard, Lisi, Christian Shortill, Boccia and Lipscombe.
The coaches want to congratulate all players on a hard-fought but trying season which saw personal improvements on the part of every player.
