Churches and groups getting ready for start of their fall activities
Nobleton Notes
By Angie Maccarone (905) 859-5174 Horticulture

"Oh what a beautiful morning, oh what a beautiful day, I've got a beautiful feeling . . ."

Some 16 members of the Nobleton - King City Horticultural Society shared this sentiment earlier in the month when we visited Plant Paradise, a property on Humber Station Road just north of Old Church Road in Caledon as guests of owners Lorraine and Robb Roberts.

Lorraine gave us a tour of the beautiful gardens she and her husband continue to create, pointing out many unusual plants that they grow. She told us that digging liberal quantities of composted cattle manure into the garden is a sure natural way to create a soil in which most plants will thrive. This strategy is working well with her heavy clay soil and the sandy conditions just a short distance north. She also advised us that when planting, especially in hot, dry weather, we should first water the plant in its container, then dig the hole twice as wide and deep as the ball of earth around the plant roots, mix in two or three handfuls of composted cattle manure and water so the soil in the bottom of the hole is moist but not sloppy. In a minute or two set the plant in, holding it so that the top of the ball of earth is about half an inch below the surface of the surrounding ground. Now lightly pack the loose earth around and under the ball. The little saucer created at the base of the plant will hold and channel water down into its thirsty roots.

We ended our enjoyable and informative morning with light refreshments in a grove of pines. Many thanks to the Roberts, who by the way welcome visitors most days to Plant Paradise, and to Sandra Kirby and Roz Elson, who arranged our visit and delicious lunch which followed at the Wishbone Restaurant.

Keep in mind the up coming August meeting and flower show Aug. 27 at 8 p.m. in the Nobleton Community Hall on Old King Road, just east of Highway 27 north of the arena complex. The theme and premiere arrangement of the show is "Hot! Hot! Hot!" Guest speaker will be Hans Martin, who will make a presentation on bees pollination and pesticides. Remember to bring along your thoughts and ideas for celebrating the 50th anniversary of the society to this meeting.

Floral entries must be in place and correctly tagged by 7:30 p.m. when judging begins. Please note only exhibitors, judges and show committee members are permitted in the flower show area before the meeting starts. Your cooperation is important in this matter.

Nobleton UCW

Our first meeting of the fall season will take place Sept. 5, just after Labour Day weekend. The theme for the meeting is Early Harvest and our guest speaker is Susan Feddema from Round the Bend Farm in Kettleby. Please come for lunch at 12:30 and enjoy Susan's talk about pumpkins.

Also, at the meeting we will be making plans for our annual bazaar, a very important event in the life of our church. The bazaar will be held Oct. 27 at the Nobleton United Church.

St. Mary Catholic Women's League

Our first meeting will be coming up soon, so please stay tuned for details. Plans are underway for our annual Fall Tea/Bazaar, which is being held this year Sept. 23 at the Nobleton Lion's Hall (Community Town Hall on Old King Road). New small items are required for our penny raffle and the the baskets that are so beautifully put together and raffled off at this Tea. Our raffle tickets are selling like hot cakes, as they are a bargain at $1 each. They are available from any Catholic Women's League (CWL) member.

We will be getting together once again for the baking of our pies and the sewing of our quilts. Stay tuned for these dates as well.

If you require any further information on this event or additional raffle tickets to sell, please call Angie at (905) 859-5174 for further details.
