Firefighters able to save most of burning house

Damage is estimated in the area of $750,000 after a large house on Jane Street, south of Lloydtown - Aurora Road, caught fire Saturday night.

Township Fire Chief Bryan Burbidge said the fire was reported by neighbours at 9:19 p.m., and personnel from the King City station responded. The stations in Nobleton and Schomberg provided manpower and equipment too.

The chief said the firefighters were able to "make a fairly good stop on it," adding they were able to save about three-quarters of the building.

One firefighter received a cut hand fighting the blaze, but that was the only injury. The occupants of the house were away at the time.

Burbidge said it looked like the fire started in the garage area, but the actual cause has yet to be determined. He did say that house was equipped with smoke detectors, and they were working.

As well, he pointed out there were gates at the entrance to the property, and while they didn't impede the work of firefighters, he stressed the importance of property owners making sure emergency personnel are able to get on site in situations like that.
