Elephants take a stroll around Newmarket Police frequently have to deal with prowlers in the night, but it proved to be a big job for York Regionals early one recent morning. Police assisted Garden Brothers Circus staff in corralling two elephants who walked away from their pen in Newmarket early July 12. Police received a call from a citizen at about 3 a.m., advising two elephants were taking a stroll near the Ray Twinney Recreational Complex in the area of Yonge and Eagle Streets. An electronic fence around the elephants' pen was inadvertently disabled for a short period, allowing the animals to leave the area and enjoy snacking on several trees nearby, police report. Officers arrived and assisted the trainer and a resident with getting Suzy and Bunny back to their pens. There were no injuries or damage to property and the public was not in any immediate danger from the animals. |
