Government provides funding aimed at making York safer Vaughan - King - Aurora MPP Greg Sorbara has announced provincial funding of $26,165.71 for York Regional Police, helping to fulfil the McGuinty government's commitment to make Ontario communities safer. "We're giving police the tools and resources they need to protect Ontarians from the danger on our roads," said Sorbara. "The Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere program has a history of success and our government is committed to supporting RIDE programs." York Regional Police was one of 172 municipal police services and Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachments across the province to receive RIDE funds for 2006-'07. The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services provides $1.2 million to municipalities annually for RIDE program activities. "This announcement demonstrates our comprehensive approach to ensuring our police force in York Region has the resources they need to ensure that neighbourhoods like Thornhill remain safe and secure for everyone," said Thornhill MPP Mario Racco. Drinking and driving is still the principal cause of criminal death and injury in this society. The RIDE program provides funds for drinking and driving counter-measures beyond those carried out routinely by police. |
