Be aware of laws for off-road vehicles

York Regional Police are reminding residents about laws governing the operation of off-road vehicles.

The use of these vehicles is a lot more common during the summer, and police said they have been responding to numerous calls about them being driven on the roadway, sidewalks and private property.

Drivers of off-road vehicles are not permitted to operate them on public roads or any area prohibiting the use of motorized vehicles, such as public parks and hydro right-of-ways.

The public should be aware ATVs (all-terrain vehicles), pocket bikes, electric and motorized scooters (Go-Peds), personal mobility devices, low-speed vehicles and riding lawnmowers are not permitted on public roads.

Although many of these vehicles are available to consumers for purchase, buyers may not be aware theys must be registered, plated and insure. Riders must wear helmets and children must be supervised by an adult.

Anyone found operating one of these vehicles illegally will face charges for driving an unlicensed and uninsured motor vehicle, according to police. The vehicle may be impounded and fines may be as high as $5,000. Parents of children riding these vehicles unsupervised can also be charged.

York Regional Police have put together an information pamphlet on off-road vehicles and it is available at local police district stations, bicycle shops, libraries and at www.yrp.ca
