Christ Church still celebrating heritage in this sesquicentennial year

All Saints' Anglican Church

Submitted by

Claire Alexander

This Sunday (Aug. 5), enjoy visiting the 150-yearold chapel with your neighbours, and take a tour to see the progress on a rainbow of colours that brighten up the church. Participate in worship with this friendly congregation, led by our honorary assistant Rev. Ann Shorrocks. Join in a service of Holy Eucharist at 8 or 10 a.m., and stay to chat at 11 a.m. with new friends. Nursery care is available all summer.

Next Sunday (Aug. 12), Nancy Devine will preach, and Rev. Shorrocks will celebrate communion.

As we reminisce during this sesquicentennial year, about the history of the chapel opening, try to picture John Strachan, the first Anglican bishop of Toronto, as he slowly approached the wooden door. After three resounding knocks, he took a large iron key and officially opened the door. Among the earliest families to hear that knock were names like Armstrong, Dunning, Stokes and Watson.

The name Langstaff is still present with us, as well as being remembered in schools, area, street and York Central Hospital's park. James Henry also attended, whose grandson, the former Ontario premier George S. Henry, left his name, in turn, on a Don Mills street and school.

Descendants of the original Watsons later left their touch in the larger church, in the gift of the beautiful stained glass windows of the Ascension of Christ. If anyone knows of the artist, please let us know.

In 1940, the original pipe organ was installed in the church, and dedicated to George and Sarah Watson. The organ and pipes are now undergoing refurbishing. After the final stage of organ restoration, we welcome the community to a celebratory dedication in memory of Charles and Janet Burns, Sept. 30.

During renovating and repainting hours this week, musicians interested in the set-up of the tiny pipes, normally hidden from sight, may like to drop in and see the pipes and the wooden bases, while they lie spread out around the pews until repairs are completed.

All Saints' Anglican Church at 12935 Keele St. in King City, is a few doors south of King Road. We celebrate the Eucharist at 8 and 10 a.m. in the chapel. The office is open from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday in the summer.

If you know of a need or would like prayer, please contact the church office, or Rev. Nicola Skinner, at (905) 833-5432, or (EOL). Still in progress, our new Web site is at www.allsaintskingcity. com
