Horticulture

"A fiery sun sets once again o'er the parched Saharan plain" - and many of us feel we're sharing that rain starved plain!

Gardens in the area have only been teased by passing clouds full of false promises. For more than seven weeks, we've had no more than a few momentary showers. The old saying goes that "if on St. Swithin's Day (July 15) rain should fall, it shall rain for 40 days in all."

Well it rained briefly on that day, but that was it, except in England.

In my garden, the day lilies (hemerocallis) are doing well, especially one with large ruffled lemon yellow blooms called Mary Todd, that I bought in May two years ago at Humber College in Etobicoke at the horticultural students' annual perennial sale. Surprisingly, my red, white, pink and burgundy monarda (bee balm--bergamot-- Oswego tea), which usually likes dampish soil, is blooming beautifully too. Eustomas (lisianthus), annuals that grow about a foot high with lovely large upright white, pink or purple bell-shaped flowers, are also doing well at the east side of the house that is shady from 2 p.m. on. Now I only have eight plants in sandy soil that's been enriched with leaf compost and composted cattle manure and I water them every two or three days. These were free for nothing at the Humber College sale, because they were so small.

Another plant looking very happy in this garden, even though we're under a watering ban, is my perovskia (Russian sage, which I'm told is neither a sage nor Russian). This easily-grown three-foot perennial, with its wands of tiny misty lavender coloured florets, gives its corner of the garden a welcome suggestion of coolness.

Movies on the Lawn

If you haven't been there yet, please try to attend the movie being shown next Wednesday (Aug. 8) on the 34-foot screen with professional projection and sound at the Nobleton Arena Sports Park.

The next feature is RV, staring Robin Williams.

The gates are to open at 8 p.m. and the movie will start at approximately 9 p.m. (when it gets dark).

The remaining movie dates are Aug. 22; and Sept. 5 and 19 (two rain dates have been scheduled for Sept. 12 and 29).

You can go to the Web site at www.starlightmoves. ca to get the full impact of what is being held. Here you will find trailers of the films, quizzes, games and other fun stuff. One can also order their season or individual tickets via secure online credit card from the Web site.
