Nobleton Notes Horticulture The annual garden tour hosted by the Nobleton - King City Horticultural Society was a great success with more visitors this year than in the past, thanks to a group of dedicated members and friends, all volunteers. Thank you for all your hard work. A special thanks to Maria Pedersen and Blair Day, the tour co-ordinators. Many thanks to the garden owners who so kindly invited us into their lovely gardens, each one a jewel on its own, and of course to all those who took time out to come to the gardens as visitors. Many thanks as well to Primrose Garden Centre, Nobleton PharmaSave, Black Forest Garden Centre and Crawford Wells in King City for their generous support. Plans are already being made for the 2008 tour as part of the society's 50th anniversary celebrations. Speaking of this 50th year, the society would like to have suggestions from members and friends as to what they would and wouldn't like done to mark this event. Please bring ideas written or oral to one of the upcoming flower shows, the next being Aug. 27 (there is no show or meeting in July) or contact the society at www altflora.com/nobleton Now is a great time to visit local garden centres for perennials on sale. Zehrs, Loblaws (Super Stores) Canadian Tire Garden Centres, which usually close at the end of July, have terrific bargains now. If you cut down delphiniums to about six inches above the ground, they will rebloom towards the end of August, but not as profusely as their first blooming. Keep dead heading coreopsis and flowering will continue well into October. A Farewell at St. Paul's Rev. Van Dusen (Pastor Barry) and his family will be leaving St. Paul's Nobleton to shepherd another congregation in Sarnia. This Sunday (July 29) will be the last Sunday that Van Dusen will preach at St. Paul's. Join us for worship at 9:45 a.m. Nursery care (for children up to five years of age) is provided during the service and Sunday school (for adults only) follows at 11:00 a.m. For more information about any of the church activities, contact the church office at (905) 859- 0843. Movies on the Lawn If you haven't been there yet, please try to attend the movie being shown tonight (Wednesday) on the 34-foot screen with professional projection and sound at the Nobleton Arena Sports Park. The feature tonight is Night at the Museum, staring Ben Stiller, Carla Gugino, Dick Van Dyke, Mickey Rooney and Robin Williams. The gates are to open at 8 p.m. and the movie will start at approximately 9 p.m. (when it gets dark). The remaining movie dates are Aug. 8 and 22; and Sept. 5 and 19 (two rain dates have been scheduled for Sept. 12 and 29). You can also check out the Web site at www.starlightmovies.ca to get the full impact of what is being held. Here you will find trailers of the films, quizzes, games and other fun stuff. One can also order their season or individual tickets via secure online credit card from the Web site. Nobleton Lions Golfers, mark Sept. 15 on your calendar. The Lions Noblekids Charity Golf Tournament is up and running again this year. As the name says, it is now a charity event with all proceeds earmarked for kids' organizations in and around Nobleton, including Cubs and Scouts, Brownies and Guides, minor baseball and the kids' Christmas skating party with Santa, to name a few. The tournament will be held at The Highlands Golf Club in Bradford (25 minutes north of Nobleton). We are limited to 20 teams or 80 golfers, so contact a Lions Club member soon to reserve a spot, or a team. Corporate hole sponsorships are available, and team sponsorships are also welcome. All will be publicly acknowledged. Contact a Lions Club member to sign up. The entry fee is $100 per person, which includes 18 holes of golf with a cart, a meal of steak or chicken, and all golfers will receive a gift. For details contact Ray Castator at (905) 859-4138. The Lions Club is seeking new members at this time. If you are interested in helping your community become a better place to live while having lots of fun, please call Greg Hill at (905) 859-0895. |
