$1,000 grant to update photo album An album of old photographs taken around King was published in 1978, and the King Township Historical Society has decided it should be updated. King councillors recently agreed to provide a $1,000 grant to the effort out of the Township's community grant program. Society president Virginia Atkins, in a letter to council, said the album was compiled by Elizabeth Gillham, author of Early Settlements of King Township. The plan is to replicate the old edition, since very few copies of the Album of Oldies exist, "so that young people and newcomers to King would be able to appreciate the valuable historical record shown in the pictures." Atkins also observed the text of the album indicated how Gillham's generation viewed themselves and their generation, "making it not only an entertaining volume, but also a useful reference work." The project is expected to cost about $11,000, and Atkins said she's talked to a representative of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, who encouraged applying for funding of part of the production costs. She also asked council to consider the $1,000 grant. It was Councillor Jeff Laidlaw who moved the grant, pointing out sufficient money is in the community grant program, and it passed without further comment. |
