Nobleton's Jan Vernon's retired
By Bill Rea

The end of one school year and the advent of another usually means a lot of changes, both for students and staff.

The changes coming to Nobleton Public School will be right at the top, as principal Jan Vernon has retired.

She said there have been a number of changes in her life, including her husband's retirement and her becoming a grandmother, making it a fitting time to step back. She added they will be moving to Haliburton, and they have a place in Texas where they plan to spend their winters.

"It was a tough decision, but it is time," she remarked.

Vernon has been teaching since 1969, starting in North York and moving to York in 1985. She's only been principal at Nobleton for two years.

Over that time, she has noticed that some things have changed, while others have stayed the same.

"The amount of paperwork has definitely changed," she remarked, adding the kids have not. "Kids are kids are kids."

"I have just loved every single year of my career," she added.

Vernon said she has a few other plans in the works, apart from "looking forward to throwing out my alarm clock."

Her plans include taking Spanish and piano lessons. "I still consider myself a learner," she said.

Current vice-principal Nancy Redman will be taking over the helm for the new school year, and Cathy Martino-Poretta will be the new vice-principal.
